  1. Re:Confusion on Wormholes? Maybe. · · Score: 1

I completely understand the theory and reason why wormholes are good things. Being able to traverse distances by taking a short cut through a wormhole is *intensely* useful.

I believe that my initial question was misunderstood.

The question would have been better stated like this:
What use is a wormhole to us if we do not have the ability to set the destination?

I mean we could open up numerous wormholes and travel through them, explore for a little while, and then come back. Without the means to create a stable *permanent* wormhole, it would have very little use except for exploration and even then loosely. We go through a wormhole, explore a region of space that we have no idea where or how it relates to our base reference (earth) then we zip back through the wormhole and we have to close it because we cannot sustain the energy levels needed.

    Solution? Here is a thought...
Tap into the sun's energy to sustain the wormhole, indefinately. There would have to be a coordination essentially between stars of wormhole "gates". I guess the only people that would anger are members of the newly founded Solar-Eco Peace Foundation that ride little spacecraft to the sun to try to annoy the big science vessels. *jokes*

  2. Confusion on Wormholes? Maybe. · · Score: 3

    How is this useful?
That is not a silly or stupid question. If you created a new wormhole everytime you wanted one, have they worked out a way to set the *destination* of the exit?

Once opened, how much energy would it require to maintain it? Do we just open it for a short while, send a ship out and then abandon it?

I am interested to read the actual article, not just a blurb or two from it.

The motion picture industry decides when people are *allowed* to purchase something, go to a movie, or to import a movie.
It is called a RELEASE DATE.

Where do you think those come from?

  4. Market Manipulation? on Playstation 2 Recalled In Japan · · Score: 1

    Market Manipulation is not illegal.

If market manipulation were illegal, then movie makers would be forced to release a product in theaters, VHS, and DVD all at once.

As it is right now, a movie is released in the states, a month later it is released in the UK and Australia, a month after that, the rest of the world in staggered releases, then we have the release of the DVD and VHS in the states. The release of the DVD and VHS is also staggered in other countries to match the same time frame as the states.

Companies in general can ensure a steady stream of profits by trickling the product throught the cycles.

Dodge, for example, had 5000 Neons sitting on the Belvidere production facility in Illinois for three months before the car was first released.

A company has to worry about supply versus demand and make sure they are not going to fail in the market.

Does anyone remember that initially Sony was against DVD's in the first place? Sony would not make a DVD player until they made sure that the market was solid.

If people really want to watch the latest DVD's that are released in other countries, they can purchase that region's player with which to do so. There is nothing stopping them from doing that. There are no rules or regulations against that.

  5. *sighs* on Playstation 2 Recalled In Japan · · Score: 1

You eloquence suggests that maybe you do not understand the real reason why DVD's are encoded for region specific viewing.

There is a commercial advantage for the US residents that are DVD fans. A DVD can be released to the public a lot sooner than VHS. Why? The reason why some VHS movies were not released until a good year after the movie was released is due to lack of encoding.

Now, we do not have to wait a year until a movie has hit all markets in theatres, we can run out and buy it on DVD four months after it's theatrical release.

I am sure that a lot of the people griping about DVD encoding would also gripe about waiting a year or more for their favorite movies to be released.

Plus, if someone is that avid of a DVD fan that they have to buy the latest foriegn films before they are allowed to be shipped to the US, then MAYBE that one percent should spend the extra money to buy a player from the region.

I wanted to start with something harsh and crass, but I will refrain.
If an Amiga (anything) can beat your PII, I would seriously examine to issues with your PII, as it is either dead or dying.
As an animation freak, the Amiga was a superb tool when combined with a Video Toaster, in 1992. However, it was quickly passed over by a lot of animation software that worked quite well on a 486dx4/100. No one in the studio I worked in would touch the amiga after the Pentiums were released.

Any Amiga fans need to accept the fact that the Amiga is dead and should remain so.
