  1. From the article... on Siberian Discovery Suggests Almost All Dinosaurs Were Feathered · · Score: 3, Funny

What exactly did all these different feathers do? "I don't know; nobody knows for sure," Godefroit says. "These animals couldn't fly, that's all we can tell you."

Of course these dinosaurs couldn't fly; everyone knows that in the late Triassic, the Pterosaurs received a broad-reaching patent titled "Feathery Apparatus for Flight". Regrettably, the patent term length at the time was over one hundred million years.

  2. Re:VPS costs several times more on Ask Slashdot: Choosing a Web Language That's Long-Lived, and Not Too Buzzy? · · Score: 1

The landscape has changed. VPS used to have a large additional cost compared to shared hosting. This effectively limited smaller budgets to the web programming languages the shared hosting provider supported - mostly PHP. VPS is now as cheap as shared hosting:
Digital Ocean VPS starts at $5/month
    Linode VPS starts at $10/month
There are even sites dedicated to just cataloging inexpensive VPS hosting
Personally, I just started using Digital Ocean on the $5 month plan; just the low latency of their VPS makes it a big step up from my prior shared hosting provider (Bluehost), despite the same cost.

  3. Filemaker Pro 13 Advanced on Ask Slashdot: Easy-To-Use Alternative To MS Access For a Charity's Database? · · Score: 5, Informative

Filemaker Pro is the major alternative to Microsoft Access for small business. When you need to hand off this project to the staff members who don't do development full-time, its critical to that the system be as simple to learn for the layperson as possible. I'm guessing this is why you're asking as opposed to going with the pure OSS solutions that you are most familiar with. Like Access, both frontend UI and the backend database are managed from one integrated IDE. Unlike Access, Filemaker Inc. is wholly owned by Apple (its been around for over 20 years), has versions for both OSX and Windows, can be used with a MySQL backend, and doesn't tie you into Microsoft's web of licensing. Also, there is a free app for IOS devices (Filemaker Go) that makes it easy to add iPhones and iPads to the mix. The mobile copies of the database can be designed to sync over USB or WIFI, enabling usage without relying on Senegal's probably spotty 3G coverage. Disclaimer: I've developed several custom Filemaker solutions for small business and then trained the end users on how to use the solution and modify it their needs change. Good luck!

Ever since we built enough nuclear ICBMs to threaten mutually assured destruction, the most important military personnel have been those who diligently guard their country's nuclear weapons arsenal . As long as we possess nuclear weapons, their job performance (or lack thereof) may one day save or destroy millions or billions of lives. Like the Night's Watch in GoT, being a nuclear officer is not a glamorous job, but this work is infinitely more important to the safety of regular citizens than any other section of the armed forces or law enforcement (obviously TSA would be near the opposite end of the spectrum of usefulness). Its time we reassess our definition of heroism around the people that really make the difference in our continued survival.

  6. Re:Teamviewer on Simple, Free Web Remote PC Control? · · Score: 1

I use LogMeIn free and teamviewer. With all remote support tools, you have to get the user on the remote PC to activate/setup the remote connection, and in this area Teamviewer is faster and easier. Like Logmein it plays well with Windows Vista and 7's User Account Control, and like Logmein you can do Windows -> Mac remote control and the reverse. Unlike LogmeIn Free, Teamviewer enables file transfers (with low overhead). Finally neither require any router/port forwarding configuration, building a custom executable, etc. Remember one of the most important criteria for a remote support tool is ease of setup for the person being helped.
