  1. Steve Gibson on DoS Attacks Persisting, On The Rise · · Score: 1

Here's a nice page about Steve Gibson's "discoveries" as a security expert: http://grcsucks.com/ Pretty lame name, but a good read.

...And they break too easily. I've wondered sometimes if the makers of floppy disks have lowered the quality of the disks over the last 10 years. I hardly remember any disks breaking back in the days when I used the Amiga 500 and 1200. Then I didn't even have a harddrive, just around a thousand floppies. Sure some disks broke, but nowadays every disk seem to break after just a couple of uses.

Actually there are quite a few servers using laptop style floppy drives too. We have a couple of Hewlett Packard servers in our server room which use that kind of drives.

  5. Lotus Domino market share on Mac OS X Version of Lotus Notes 6 · · Score: 2, Interesting

People seem to think that no one uses Lotus Notes/Domino these days. I think I remember seeing some numbers presented on Lotus Sphere '02 where thay claimed to have ~51% of the market for groupware products in Europe. I can't find that data right now. But I searched for Lotus Domino at InfoTech Trends. The script returned the following forecast number of seats for Q4 2000 (you have to pay for information newer than that):

00Q4 - Forecast number of seats for groupware/messaging, by program.
    Seats (mil)
    Software 1998 1999 2000
    Lotus Domino 34 55 65
    Microsoft Exchange 24 44 58

    Total 58 99 123

Unix based solutions obviously isn't included in this survey. But I think it clearly shows that Notes/Domino has a quite large market share.

So why don't you invest some money in a DLT-robot? Where I work we have a Compaq TL891 Minilibrary. It has a magazine which holds 10 DLTs. We have six such magazines which we change once a week. In each magazine we have one DLT for Monday-Thursday,Saturday-Sunday. Then There are three DLTs for Friday (full backup) and one cleaning tape. And it's great when I have to restore files, usually the users report within a week when they've lost a file so the correct tape is probably in the drive. This saves me from the long trip from my office to the server room. If you need more space or speed it's possible to connect several units and add another DLT-tapestreamer inside.

  7. An alternative to dselect on Debian NetBSD · · Score: 1

dselect is pretty hard to get started with, but it works fine when you get used to it (as most software). But I can really recommend console-apt which is a replacement based on an ncurses-interface. I use it all the time even though I know dselect really well.

Give it a try if you don't like dselect:

People are just to darn lazy to give a damn. It's just to easy to not send a card, no one will see that you didn't do it. I say we should force everyone who has used postcardware without "paying" the license to wear a yellow cone on their head.

But I guess most of us would be wearing 'em then.
