I have used RedHat Linux and OpenOffice in the Army. They are there and implemented in combat. The soldier isn't aware of this because they work behind the scenes, but open source is being used in several applications.
Why ask why for the sake of asking? He knows very well why they ask to see IDs. This sounds like a question a junior high student would ask. If he thinks this is a valid, intrinsic form of protest, then I guess we should allow him to waste his time with it.
When I was in Baghdad there were rumors going around about explosives in soda cans targeted at Americans. Joe will believe anything when he is deployed. Like that time they told us we were going home... We did, 11 months later.
Thats because us Joe's have learned to not kill ourselves, but rather to kill all of those critical, asshole people who comment on everything in the world but don't actually do anything about it.

When I was there, there was a contest to hack the bell tower on North Campus. I guess its midi seq. was on the net. No one did while I was there. (Would have been great to have been out playing beach volleyball and had some "hockey game music" playing.
