  1. Replacement for G-TECH/Pro? on Tilt Sensors For Palm Pilots · · Score: 1

It looks like the use of the dongle and an app could replace the G-TECH/Pro performance meter for 0-60, 1/4 mile, braking and lateral G measurements, maybe even horsepower. Is there any reason why this wouldn't work?

  2. Getting /.ed on Security Expert Dave Dittrich on DDoS Attacks · · Score: 2

While it may not be intentioned this way, getting /.ed can result in the same effect as a DoS attack, the lack of service from the site in question. If the site is not aware of a mention on /., they could easily miscontrue the resulting lack of service as having resulted from a DoS attack. A link from any media source has this potential. Slashdot has just had it happen often enough to have given it a name.

  3. Moderators, AC comments & net civility on Interview: Jon Katz Answers · · Score: 1

How much of the crap that you have noticed has been due to ACs? Would it help if there were additonal filtration for AC comments, either filtering out all AC comments or AC comments scored below a certain level? If such filtration were enabled, the lack of an audience just might slow the growth of such posts. (yeah, right!)

Regarding Katz's net civility comment, the filtration of AC comments may allow the discussions to at least have the appearace of civility, if even viewing all comments were to show that not to be the case.

I don't want to eliminate all AC comments. I have even posted that way myself. However, it can easily get out of hand, and often does.

  4. Nino musings on Good-Bye Nino; Hello from Handspring · · Score: 1

So, Phillips is dropping the Nino. I can't say I blame them. I have one, a 320, and am not sure I would buy another. It still functions as intended; there has only been one major data loss :-| and my backup was out of date. :-( My biggest gripe is the buttons on the side. Just picking it up can turn it on, even when it is in the case. It turns off again but it helps eat the batteries more quickly.

My use of the Nino is nothing spectacular, mostly synching with Outlook, tracking lists of things, storing e-books and a few PocketStreet maps, though my move to Linux impacts this a bit. With a 48M CF card, it can hold a lot of books from project Gutenberg and a lot of maps. I haven't bought a paperback in quite a while. That's one of the reasons I got it in the first place, instead of a Palm that is, because I could easily expand the storage. Though it has less storage, maybe the Visor can take its place when I am ready for a replacement.

As to the Nino being supported, I haven't needed support other than being able to download updated software. I hope Phillips does keep supporting it just for those already stuck with one, and for those involved with the LinuxCE effort. Of course, if they do stop support, it will also hurt the CE effort even more than just stopping sales. Consumers will realize that if one brand can drop out, so can others, and they will be left with no support. Not having such a variety of Palm brands, there hasn't been time for one of them to drop out yet. Given time, I'm sure that will happen, too.

  5. leaks are already happenning on Gene Leakage · · Score: 1

I read an article several months ago where this was already happening. In this case, the company, (might have been Monsanto), was suing a farmer because some of their prized genes showed up in his crops and he hadn't bought any of their seed. The article mentioned that since the farmer saved some of his seed to plant the next season, it was likely that this crop was cross-pollinated with that of a neighbor farmer, one who had purchased the seed.

  7. possibility and a question on How to "Wow" with Linux? · · Score: 1

You may try running some windows programs under wine. With a little fiddling (copying of DLLs), one of my coworkers was able to run Lotus Notes this way.

Also, are there any programs or types of programs that he uses (or likes) a lot like web browsing (Netscape), games (Quake, Doom), graphics (GIMP), etc.? This may help in making recommendations.
