  1. Linux has better Java Support on FreeBSD 4.1.1 vs. Linux 2.4 · · Score: 1

Here's one reason I'm sticking with Linux, Linux actulally has good support for Java. Plus you have several VM to choose from. Several of which are very good. I can run anything from Tomcat, to WebLogic, from jEdit to JBuilder without a hitch. I can't do all of that with FreeBSD. All of that speed means very little when I can't run an application.

I was suprised to see that FreeBSD only supports JDK 1.1.8. I thought Mac OS had it bad but this is really bad for a UNIX OS to be so far behind with Java. Maybe with a little pressure, Apple will aid the BSD camp with their Java knowledge. The Java implementation in OS X is very fast and plays very well with Swing based Apps.

GCC, & CC, ships on the Mac OS X development tools CD that was recieved by ADC Members over the weekend. ADC Online members will be able to download it soon. How many designers do you that need GCC?

  3. Tenons false claims of porting Tomcat to OS X on X11R6.4 And Apache On Mac OS X Beta · · Score: 2

Take a look at the info about iTools. Tenon has claimed to have ported Tomcat to OS X. The funny thing is that Tomcat has been running on OS X since it had Java support. Also consider how odd it is to have "ported" a Java program to another platform. I have Tomcat running under OS 9 and I also had it running under DP 4 back in June. Now I'm sure that Tenon has created a nicer interface to Tomcat, but to call it a "port" is wrong. Does anyone know if this violates the license that Tomcat is released under?

  4. command+v on More On The Mac and Unix · · Score: 1

You don't need to have a middle mouse button. The Mac has a huge number command key sequences for doing such things. The best part of the key commands is that they are all pretty much the same accross all Mac apps.

Just and FYI, all of the standard BSD directories are available on OS X, they are just not accessible form the Finder. You can get at them via the Terminal app. UNIX applications can still access these directories if they need to.

Office 2001 for Mac OS X is not a Cocco app, but rather a Carbon Application which does not use Obj-C. Besides, Office 2001 for Mac OS X won't be released until January, about 6 months after the Mac OS 9 release.
