  1. Re:Intel 2100/2200 Internal DSL Modems on Ricochet Modems == Wireless LAN? · · Score: 1

    I've been looking for a driver for this too. No evidence that I can find that one exists yet. My brother has a Qwest DSL circuit and that's what they gave him to connect with. You could run windows on a 486 and stick a network card in it and use a crossover cable to hook the winbox to your real computer or use a straight cable from the winbox to a hub and a straight cable from the hub to your computer. A better way to do it would be to get a used Cisco 675 router and use that. It will prob'ly cost more than a 486 with a network card, but it works with the same data encoding that the Intel card uses and takes up less space (and generates less heat). It won't crash every 47 days either but you will have to reboot it every time it gets scanned by the Code Red worm because it won't bridge any more until you cycle power on it.

    "is like streamlining a 1954 Volkswagen Beetle." Then you're not a Karman Ghia fan? I thought it was a great way to speed the little "bug"ger up quite a bit _and_ increase the gas mileage at the same time. I must admit that it had a profound impact on the ability of the Karman to store/carry any items that you might want to take with you though. I also discovered that any attempt at formatting my comment here is defeated by the posting system which invokes the lamenesss filter to save me from inserting junk characters. Is there a fix for this feature?

  3. Re:Where'd the diamonds come from? on Bus-sized Meteorite Gives Clues To Earth's Origin · · Score: 1

    The only method that I am aware of that forms diamonds in a "flash" process, i.e., not requiring tons of pressure per square inch for a LONG time rather than in an ex/implosion or shockwave, requires vaporizing carbon and condensing it on a "seed" diamond crystal that the rest of the diamond forms around. Not likely to be the method that formed these diamonds inside solid rock, but probably not impossible. On the other hand I could hardly be familiar wih all of the processes that might operate on something that has become a meteorite in the course of it's lifetime since I'm not an astrogeologist (if there is such a field). I'm inclined to believe that this was a chunk of something much larger where mundane processes formed the diamonds and then the larger body was broken up. Not very exciting though.

    Howdy, What I saw in the article was that this would be a non-profit corporation backed by all the companies named. The likelihood of there being an IPO for a non-profit company seems pretty slim to me. Anybody know of a non-profit that offers stock?
