Meanwhile our l33t friends have installed a nice DoS package. Imagine what someone could do with the 10 OC48's running into the back of the servers. Or, even just scanning for active accounts and stealing them. There is nothing to suggest that there was anything 'bad' done, but who knows? I would shut that box(s) down as quick as I could. I wouldn't even bother to shut down. Pull the plug (NIC of course)

Remove all porn and such sites from every other TLD, and replace it with a .sex (or .porn) site. Example: hotteensex.com becomes hotteensex.sex. Then, all you have to do is block the entire TLD. Who would want to have a site in there that is 'educational?'

Someone is going to say this would be hampering the porn site operators freedom of speach, but we can come around that too. Do not take away the .com domains, but ask that they are turned into redirects. Anyone can go to hotteensex.com, but they are instantly transferred to hotteensex.sex (which the filters block)

If a site does not want to comply with this 'policy,' then do not allow them to reregister their domain when it expires.

"After months of reviewing the 'Carnivore' system, we have decided there is nothing bad about it at all. In fact, this machine is completely secure, and is impossible to hack. It uses an advanced security method, New Technology File System, developed by Microsoft to keep its files protected and secret. This device is so great, every ISP in the world should have one. We, completely unbiased and open-minded, believe there should be a carnivore unit sitting behind every connection to the Internet - from the smallest DSL line to the biggest OC-128.

Again, we state, that there is no reason this should not be put out."

The formible Slashdot (Nastaq - ANDV ) has fallen so low as to actually post stories that appear to be nothing more than rumors. While this has happened before, often submitted by frequent reader Anonymous Coward, this is the first time a story has been posted without a link, leading hundreds of faithful readers to assume Slashdot has ran out of "News for nerds, stuff that matters."

Recently, Slashdot.com has been posting stories with malformed links, links pointing to the incorrect address, and stories misgarbled to the point where the reader cannot click through to a web page or understand the entire article. Meanwhile, many readers have been submitting news articles about free domain names, new anti spam legislation, and even the popular "Microsoft Plan to Take Over the World. "

Thankfully, several readers were able to quickly post links to today's story.

In conclusion, maybe all the Slashdot editors have been so drunk, they have hired minions of horny monkeys to approve story submissions. Can it get any worse? Hopefully, only better..

"but cant anyone just run an smtp server? does username@ipnumber not work as an address? I figured that it does, as it would only look at mx records if its user@hostname. "

    Lets try the first one:
Yes, anyone can run an SMTP server. Many ISPs do block the outgoing traffic though. If you are fortunate enough to have one that does not, then your SMTP host will send mail, but not receive it. You can convince your SMTP server to pretend to be whatever host you want it to be. You too can send mail and pretend to be CmdrTaco@slashdot.org! You will not be able to receive mail though.

The format username@hostname.domain.tld is the only form that works. When you send mail, the SMTP server is going to use DNS to resolve the name. A request will be send to hostname.domain.tld asking for the mail server's IP address. Then, the mail will be sent on its way to that IP, the mail server. If you put in an IP address such as 10.20.30.40, then your mail server is going to try and look for the tld 40, domain 30, subdomain 20, host 10.

Do I have this correct? Did I leave anything out? Someone correct me if I am wrong!
