  1. Internet + DRM on DVD-CSS's Encryption Not Enough? Here Comes DECE · · Score: 0

Digital copies of media is great. DRM that requires any central storage = bad. I think these folks need to take a trip to some remote location and see how difficult it is to get any form of Internet connection. I can see the trip to the cabin in the woods now. Lil' Johnny brought his movie collection but sees "Check Internet Connection" on the screen since the nearest cell tower or broadband hookup is 50+ miles away. Digital rights need to be transferable and usable without any 3rd party dependencies. Learn from DIVX people.

  2. Re:My local library on DRM and the Destruction of the Book · · Score: 0

Depends, did you vote for tax cuts in the last year? Support for libraries will little or no fees with expanded hours is the key. Some libraries are closed Sunday and Monday here, and we can't borrow books from out of county. The rest have odd hours that make it difficult for someone working 8-5 to utilize.

  3. Joy of flight on China's DIY Aviators Take Flight · · Score: 0

Sadly most people never get to experience the joy of flight (flying buses don't count). Homebuilt aircraft are less expensive but have a safety concern. I applaud the Chinese for exploring other avenues. I own one of the smallest general aviation aircraft you can get -- a Cessna 150. My annual costs (insurance / hangar / annual inspection / maintanance) run $10,000 - $12,000. Then add in fuel (6 gallons/hour * $3.80/gallon) and you get a real expensive hobby. People love it when I take them flying. Despite the bad press (general aviation is NOT a threat to national security) it would take severe unemployment for me to ever give up flying any type of aircraft. I can only imagine if the US imposes user fees what will happen to non-commericial flying. You want to encourage people to use air traffic control for safetly. Not avoid it to save a few $$$

  4. Not seeing the same stats on Firefox 3.5 Now the Most Popular Browser Worldwide · · Score: 0, Flamebait

IE still makes up 86% of the traffic to sites I control. Firefox just now hit the 10% mark, Safari ranks 3rd at 2.6%. This time last year IE was 89%. Chrome barely makes our charts at 0.5%. Dominant browser? Hardly. I still have 20% of my users running W2k Pro with IE6. I've had to fudge user agents on our proxy because of the warnings so many sites give them. They can't control what machines we give them, and we can't upgrade their hardware because of goverment mandated tax and budget cuts (we are a govermnent office). Running Firefox is impossible due to lack of enterprise support. Call me a m$ fanboi, I still see no benefits of running an alternative browser. Adblock you say? The proxy does the same thing only better.

  5. Re:Quickpar... on One Way To Save Digital Archives From File Corruption · · Score: 1

I was thinking the exact same thing. It works for Usenet quite well and I've even started including PAR files on any optical media I use for backup. The overhead is negligible giving how cheap storage is getting.

  6. PS3s are really good for decrypting on US Government Using PS3s To Break Encryption · · Score: 1

You should take a look at www.distributed.net. Supposedly the RC5-72 challenge could end in 6 months with about 100 PS3s contributing.
