really can't think of us getting screwed you've never gotten a laptop with a VT compatible CPU and the option is disabled in bios... well just go in a turn it on....
OH WAIT.... THERE IS NO MENU OPTION TO TURN IT BACK ON.... so someone must hack the bios to turn it on...
yes i am using a laptop with just such an issue(never dreamed to check that before buying the laptop)
geek paranoia is because we've been screwed over and over...
and if it's not paranoia it's let's keep watch and make sure it does not happen...
but please explain why how VT option is not an option on some laptops... some OEM decided that i should not be able to run VM's(with cpu acceleration) on my laptop?
Looking at where you are now, and what it's taken to get there... can you give an estimate of MAN hrs to get to a number of MILE stones you might pick..
win 3.1, win 95,win 98, win 98se, 2k, XP. server versions Vista? direct x versions.net versions (no i didn't miss ME is there anything that "requires it?") I would think it's understood that one can't give 100% accurate numbers but i think it might be of value to everyone involved to have an estimated times for some target goals.
And thank you for your time and all the hard work you have put in to this.

Microsoft is not know for it's bug squashing... I think "Microsoft squashes user contribution like compatition, naturally." would have been more accurate
Very funny I'm dealing with the same issue right now.... but i found i could still ssh in to the computer... so after 3-4 trys i found the ps/2 keyboard stuff....
do remember it's 2.5 not 2.6(3).... so things are broken....
Most anti-Spam efforts seem to be defense-based keyword filters, open relays, known Spam domains, etcetera.
My question: Where are the offensive strategies?
Example: Trace the Spam e-mail, not to the source, but to the destination:
Currently, sponsors encourage Spammers to sign-up for a revenue-generating system. Spammers must provide a tax number and personal information to be assigned a user identification (UID) number to add to the HTML script for Web pages. In return, a Spammer agrees to abide by the terms of use to get paid. If not, then the Spammer?s UID and the revenue generated for that UID will be lost.
Spammers have to give you the link to the pay/signup site with the Spammer?s UID number. You have everything you need to counter the Spam ? the UID number and the location of the site that at which the UID is used. A script can be written to parse a Spam message, snarf the Spammer and sponsor information, which then sends an e-mail complaint to the sponsor including the original e-mail and Spammer?s UID number.
As I see it, the sponsor and the Spammer are in a win-win situation right now.
Currently, by using the filter/block system whereby the Spammer's message does not reach it's intended recipient, the Spammer suffers no real consequences as there is no real penalty involved in filters and blocks. The other option of a recipient erasing the messages still does not hit the Spammer where it hurts ? in the pocketbook.
However, if the Spammer?s account is terminated or the system generates a response back to the sponsor, the Spammer loses revenue (both in lost sales and in lost time) on all of the work put into creating Web sites, sending the e-mails and has to start over with another account or company.
Spammer Losses: o Revenue for that account o All of the work that they has been done creating Web sites o Sending e-mails (time lost) o Has to start over with another account or company
Sponsor losses: o Sponsor now has to process ALL of the replies generated by the Spamming o Must cancel the account, pissing off the Spammer (NOTE: The sponsor does get to keep the money and customers created by the Spammer.)
Issues: o Will the sponsor really cancel the account once the complaint has been filed? o Can the sponsor be located? (Binary downloads) o Would it be beneficial to maintain a central database of reported UID and sponsors? o Maintaining the scripts will definitely be labor-intensive. o A method would be needed to verify that reported UIDs are actually canceled.
They are not USP property till you place them on the street... and it's only about putting/taking stuff out of them... (I've not read any of the postal codes in about 10 years....
If you have full control of the firewall then I would suggest using it to set priotity's for different protocols... IE give 110/80/52/25 (pop/www/dns/smtp) highest priority and other ports (I don't know what ports the p2p's are using) very low priotity... also bandwith allocation....
This would allow them to still us the software it would just not hog all of the network bandwith... over time you could keep lowing bandwith but that's another issue.
See Bandwith-Limiting_HOWTO "1. Introduction The purpose of this guide is to provide an easy solution for limiting incoming traffic, thus preventing our LAN users from consuming all the bandwith of our internet link. This is useful with out internet link is slow or out LAN users download tons of mp3s and the newest Linux distro's *.iso files."
How long before we see this headline....(yes this is somewhat of a troll but think about it...)
M$ license will include ONE free activation. Each time you have to reactive you will be charged $19.99.
IF winXP is rock solid and you don't ever have to format and reinstall then this will never happen...
Each time you reauthorize your XP it costs M$ money... at some point they are not going to want to reauthorize XP they are going to want you to UPGRADE to the newest windows product.... so they will charge you money to reinstall...
From a marketing stand point image is everything (as m$ has proven time and again).
Linux has proven it's self for server and desktop the for those that are willing/able to step out side of the (M$) norm and spend the time to make it work.
What are IBM's goals/strategies for marketing GNULinux/Open source(not shared source) as a viable alternative to closed source solutions for the following groups:
corporations as an Enterprises solution
small companies for servers
small companies as workstations
home computer users for the desktop
With IBM's goals/strategies mind what can GNULinux community do to improve the success of marketing GNULinux.
I believe that G.lite is what they first call the version of DSL that ships with separate filters that you use between the wall plug and other devices in your house (phone, answering machine, fax etc) the DSL modem then plugs directly in to your phone jack...
I'm guessing i think they over came some of the initial limitations and were able to release it as just DSL home install
normal DSL install requires a splitter and a separate pair(line) to the modem
This may help.
At my work we are very near the limits of our DSL (this hole area is). So Pacific bell has started a program called Pronto(spelling?). They have installed FIBER into the area and DSLAMS so that now our office will only be about 500' from the DSLAM and we'll go from 768 down to about 2000(advertised speed won't know till it's installed 3-5 weeks).
How this effects you is that they need to install a DSLAM at the end of the fiber run. This will only happened(my guess) If there are enough copper lines at the end of the fiber that want DSL.
Btw the DSLAMS have been hot since December and they are only just now offering service (may)
Look into sat service (if you can live with the latency and price)
It's not the cost of the software upgrade...
It's the COST OF INSTALLING xxx number of copies in your company.. down time etc...
Then you find out after you've upgraded that the new version is incompatible with Program Y.. so you have to upgrade program Y... oh... well the upgrade for Program Y needs OS version Z... now you get to go back to all of your computers and REINSTALL EVERYTHING RIGHT NOW... because you only have 30 days left for program XXX...
What's that going to cost a Company that has 200 or even better 2000 computer systems running "RENTED" software...
After reading most of the messages there is a lot of great information as always... but I think I'm missing something about the whole thing.
The Distributions thing has me confused ok m$ sells us there (wannabe)OS with apps that they steal/buy/claim to code. RH, Suse etc.. gather up OOS compile some/most of it and write an installer for them... how can any one expect them to completely review all the software that they include for BUGS/Security etc... they are just creating a "DISTRIBUTION" OOS programs for those people unable/unwilling to collect them from the net on there own... it's a convenience thing...
(rant) I love it.. personally I use suse then I go online and download more current source for apps I play with X, Samba etc... I'm not at the skill level yet to install the base OS and add all the shells and apps that I want to use... Depends on how long "Jest laying around is" 2 hrs and 21 mins then yes.
Depending on how long you have it you can LOCK it for a few mins and They can't use it.
TRY - wait time ---- Total Time
1-5 -- none ---------- none
6 ---- 1 minute ------ 1 minute
7 ---- 5 minutes ----- 6 minutes
8 ---- 15 minutes --- 21 minutes
9 ---- 60 minutes --- 81 minutes
10 -- 60 minutes ---141 minutes
11 -- black screen -- wiped device
I would like to add it to my unicorn and Pegasus collection.
maybe a kickstart to buy the code? [like blender?]

Number of people ask what percent along are you.

yes but what would the Licenceing cost...s p
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,1040410,00.a
I could not find pricing for datacenter...
enterprise version is $3,999 for 8cpu's.. so if we
do some math from that...
20-512 CPU Server Linceses
512 / 8 = 64
64 * $3,999 = $ 255,936
$255,936 * 20 = $ 5,118,720 (if all my math is good)
I wonder what percentage of total cost that would be....
yes i know datacenter spec's show only up to 64cpu's....
even if you half that amount it's a good chunk-o-change
(a little off topic)
There is a chance they could try to take away our fare use...
The argument of timeshifting would have been answered... even if we couldn't extract the video for archiving...
cel phones have GPS...
services are comming out follow your kid where ever they go....
Us and abuse of this and other tech...
How long before all camera are connected and can track you where ever you go???
just be cause we can does that mean we should?

Super computers(do they exist anymore) highspeed clusters?
Custom Chips that are unknown to the general public?

If/when TiVO lock's the box up the hackers will just write open source replacements for programs that do the same thing.
At first they will be limited but as time goes on they will improve and surpass anything that TiVo can do.
We after all do own the BOX...
TiVo will be best Served by not LOCKING or breaking upgraded box's.
Really what needs to be done is the M$ box needs to get hacked so that linux/open source software can be used on it also.
I have two tivos and will be installing the software and hope to add to the project.
