Part of the reason fuel taxes are high in Europe is that, post the '70s oil crisis, governments decided to keep fuel prices high so as to reduced demand, generally by efficiency measures. That way dependancy of foreign sources of energy would be reduced and the next inevetable oil crisis would not cause the kind of problems the one in the '70s did.

Efficency's not the main reason for the slow uptake of PVs as a viable alternative, it's the capital cost per unit energy generated is the problem.

Currently roof space is cheap, solar cells aren't. The big step is getting $/W down, not the W/m^2 up.

That said, ideally you want low cost _and_ high efficiency.

YMMV, but IRIX is the solidest thing we have in our shop. One of our servers is an ancient SGI (33MHz of raw power!) who's record was well over 100 days uptime, it only got shut down for a new disk drive.

We run SGI O2s, Octanes and Indys, as well as a variety of Wintel, Linux and Mac systems. IRIX's stability shines by comparison with the rest of them.

From previous slashdot, why not use lego! Somebody's done it for a DAT tape and a CD changer for parties , the link from slashdot article is now broke, but it was way cool.
