  4. Condensation will NOT be a problem. on New Semiconductor Coolers · · Score: 1

You know, thermoelectric coolers are not
designed to JUST cool. The other great thing
about them is that they are perfect for
temperature control. The computer will be
able to regulate its own processors temperature
but reversing the polarity of the power going
to the TEC as needed (so it would heat instead
of cool if the temp gets too low) so that the
temp will be cool but now below the dew point
so that there will be NO condensation.

    Pretty cool idea huh?

But it's OLD NEWS!! Plus, it doesn't really have any practical uses that I know of, other than getting us extremely close to absolute zero. They can't cool a large amount of matter with lasers so it cannot be used for air conditioning, CPU cooling, refrigeration, etc. That would be "cool" if we could, though.

Who knows anything about nanotechnology? Now today's computers can't alter the molecular structure of the CPU (HAHAHAHAHA, good one), but if we all had nanocomputers, software could do that...

With nanotechnology, software would be able to control a physical/chemical change in something by means of assemblers (nanomachines that grab atoms and molecules and place them in precise locations.)

Wow. I haven't tried that, but I can see how it would work. Ultima III read raw sectors off the diskette for the maps (that is why the scenario disk looked currupt -- no directory track). It had raw data all over it. So if you put in a different disk and cast BLINK, it would load that random location from that disk. If there were bytes that happened to represent treasure chests, and you weren't blocked, you could get them. But you might lose data on that disk. hehe. Then, put the scenario disk back in and cast blink again... hehe ingenious.

You want to know something?? I am a programmer too, and I also have been GREATLY influenced by Lord British. Now that you mention it, the first time I took an interest in programming was when I was a little kid, trying to figure out how Ultima III worked! I wanted to make my own tile-based game for the Commodore 64. Back then, my version couldn't compete! But now I am a programmer and it's what I do for a living.

Check out the old-style Ultima clone I'm working on:

You're right. The cannon would kill anything. They didn't check to see if the target was Lord Btitish or not, it just kills whatever it hits. But, I think that was Ultima II. I don't think you could take Frigate's into townes and castle's in III, could you?

I can't say anything for his latest releases though... Does anyone remember Questron??? That was a kick-ass RPG that was written in part by Richard Garriott even before Ultima.

  16. Proof that this theory is NONSENSE! on Practical Gravity Shielding for Spacecraft? · · Score: 1

Fran De Aquino claims he made a gravitational shield. I can prove that he is wrong. He says that he used 220v at 52 A to subtract 23.8 Kg off the weight of the system. Well, let's say we give a 100 Kg mass enough power to subtract 100 Kg of mass. In this case, it would levitate. We would have anti-gravity. Experiment: ------------ Take this mass and place it in verticle vacuum tunnel. Nudge it a tiny bit so it creeps up very slowly to top of tunnel. (Using a minimal amount of force... This force is recoverable anyway but we just want to be conservative.) Turn off anti-gravity. (By cutting the power to the iron coils) It falls to the bottom, releasing lots of energy! Where did this energy come from??? Problem: How much energy is release when 100 Kg of matter is dropped from a height of 100 m on Earth? v = gt p = 0.5gt^2, 100 = 4.9t^2, t=sqrt(20.4) = 4.5 s v = 9.8 * 4.5 = 44.1 m/s e = mv^2 = 100 * (44.1)^2 = 194,481 joules (or 194.4 Kj) So, if you raise the mass by 100 meters while it is weightless, you are gaining 194.4 kJ of energy. If you could accomplish the 100-meter climb in a short enough time, it could possibly take less energy to raise the mass than what is consumed by the anti-gravity generators. This would violate the laws of physics!! Let's say the anti-gravity generator requires 22,000 watts to make the 100 Kg mass levitate. (I based these figures on Aquino's experiment) It would use 194.k kJ in 8.8 seconds so the acsent would have to average 11.36 m/s. If the average speed of ascent was over 11.36 m/s, you would gain more potential energy than what was consumed to levitate it. This violates the laws of physics so Fran De Aquino's claims areimplausable!
