You're right, NASA is really trying to save a buck here and there on networking hardware. Give me a break. I guarantee you that a spool of fiber and a concentrator is lighter than a big roll of shielded 10Base-2.
I don't care how good the OS is, I'm not leaving my hardware behind for some Mac garbage. I've seen those much-touted G3s in action, and I'm totally not impressed. They just aren't as powerful as my Celeron at 504MHz. Period. The video acceleration sucks. Period. The audio options suck. Period. Now, if the Mac OS X GUI ran on the Intel Linux kernel, I'd be all about it.
But, what the hell IS CompactFlash Type II? According to the RIO manual, it takes Compact Flash memory, is Type II bigger? I see that it has pins, almost like a ribbon cable. The flash memory standards are horribly confused.
My only question.. Since my RIO takes 3.3v CompactFlash memory, can I just stick one of these in? It says that they're compatible with the Compact Flash spec, and that they run on 3.3v.. Sounds good.. 372 MB of MP3s running on a single AA battery.
Do you have a URL for "Inside Technology?" I've been working on this type of project for my car, and I've been having trouble finding a PC-on-card with LCD screen support. www.arisecomputer.com (or something close to that) has some awesome DC power supplies for sale. www.cellcomputing.com has the REALLY tiny stuff. Pretty expensive, but not really more than $1000. That seems like a reasonable price to me, dude. Industrial PCs are pretty expensive.
Actually, the only reason that I'm building my own is that none of the other kits have the proper level of display quality that I'm looking for. I definitely want some kick ass visualization on a 6" LCD, as well as touch-screen support. If you want to talk about this, send me some e-mail.
At the very least, though, let me know the URL for Inside Technology.
Who cares. The only way I use MP3s is to encode them for easy storage. I already own all of the CDs that I want to listen to. Downloaded Mp3s sound like ass compared to those created with good hardware and software anyway. Even if they stop MP3s and their ilk (Impossible) I'll still have my CD writer.;).ISO forever! Heh.

Wow, someone out there is running Linux?
I'm glad Slashdot is here to keep us on the cutting edge of today's news.
