I've tried this before with a UK teen I met playing minecraft. Needless to say, he got distracted.
I would actually be willing to shell out a few dollars towards helping purchase the 300$ Lego Mindstorm or set for Arduino programming. Or wait a few months and I'll able to fund It entirely.
An alternative to either of those is the raspberry pi. Much cheaper at 35-45$ (including set up)
