    .NET refers to application based on the .NET Framework. This does not mean that the source code for the application was written in the Visual Studio .NET IDE; in fact, an application's source code can be written in Visual Studio .NET and not utilize the .NET framework.

    Visual Studio .NET is a .NET friendly IDE that is itself built on the .NET framework. Developing .NET applications requires it no more than writing an Office XP document requires Windows XP.
