Obviously one-fourth of new Mac users are not using any OS X specific applications. There's no "Futuristic box" in OS 9 to parallel Classic in OS X.:^)
Not really... all the statistic can say for certain is that 25% of people still use OS 9. They might also use OS X, but just not as their default system. It's not all that difficult to switch boot OSes. I wouldn't call it "going out of their way" by any stretch.
Besides, OS 9 and OS X are totally different animals. Different cores, and using a different technology to help X is OK in my book. OS 9 has been EOLed, therefore, they (Apple) has no obligation to support it.
Hypothetical example: Say your new P4 system has it's motherboard crippled to slow down the bus speed. Why? Because MS says Windows 95 cannot keep up with 2000/XP. "I don't care", you say "I want XP to be faster... XP(2000) is better than 95 anyway, and MS isn't even making 95 anymore".
Maybe Apple want's to improve the speed/stability/etc of OS X, but they cannot do it while supporting legacy code with current design specs. Maybe a new G5 CPU is only going to support OS X. But then again, what do I know?
First of all, bothe KDE and Gnome are fine products, blah, blah, blah...
I used to use Gnome and Sawmill(/Sawfish) as my desktop manager, and was always
looking for ways to speed up performance, but had recently found another solution: don't use a desktop manager.
For the past few months, I've been using Blackbox with a few other utilities (bbkeys, Rox, etc.) for key binding and those times I want a graphical file manager. It's great, since I don't have any memory allocated to things I won't use.
I know many/most of you out there aren't using either Gnome or KDE, and was wondering your opinion on it. What have you missed/wanted from using a DM?
Actually, if you travel close enough to to speed of light to make Lorentz contractions an issue (time dialation), then time would slow down for you.
(Time in new coord) = (gamma)*(time - (distance*velocity)/c^2)
Where Gamma is 1/sqrt(1-velocity^2/c^2)
However, you could not travel at 99% the speed of light for *your* 10 years, then return, expecting to be younger than everyone else.
Once you start heading back, you reverse your velocity, and all time effects reverse. You would be the same age as everyone else... it's called the Twins Paradox.

Actually, there *are* cheap PocketPCs out there, you just have to look.
Why, goodness me, I went to Compaq CANADA's website, and they have the 3635 listed as $549 CDN ($325 US), including a CF sleeve, and a 32 Mb CF Card. How could I not get one when I had just bought a SonyClie that cost $75 more?
I had a PalmIII for years, then the SonyClie (610c), but having a device that can work with most files in native format (no.prc or.pdb, but honest to god.txt) for under the price of a *fancy* color palm? Granted, it's PocketPC, but you know what? I don't care. I use Linux, but it's not always great for everything. Look at the most promising Linux PDA distros out there. They work, but they need some huge storage (microdrive), or just have 1/100th the apps as PPC. Porting? Sure, maybe, but do I really want to do 3 hours work for each app I happen to want?
Do you know all the details of the actual physical processes that occur around you? Of course not. No one really does. One (but not the only) goal of physics is to create an accurate model that will predict how a system will behave. How does one do that? Math.
Newton could not explain any of his laws of motion physically, so he invented calculus to explain it for him. Was Newton a crackpot nerd physicist with a hard-on for math? Well... maybe, maybe not. But there is no doubt he was/is one of the greatest physicists of all time. The only way we can progress in the field is by creating an experimantal model to hypothesize against; i.e. a mathamatical model.
Black holes? They have a 99% chance of existing, and most likely there is one at the centre of our own galaxy. Sure, they are a mathematical creation, just a limit taken to zero, but it makes it no less valid. Do you doubt neutron stars? Brown and white dwarves? Same thing, but just different initial conditions on the equations.
I don't mean this as a berating, but why do we feel to have a competition amongst the nerds/geeks? Comp-sci better than Math worse than Mech Eng. almost as good as Physics type nonsense.
Again, no offense intended, but as a physics/astrophysics major, I tend to have a little departmental pride ^_^
It's more of a... Shelbyville idea.
Pfft... IM? I hear Microsoft Office has a new file transfer option built right in.

I think A,B,B,A,Left,Right,Start simulates a middle mouse button press.
No, but Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, B, A, ESC, Enter gives you 27 reboot overrides.
God, sometimes I really miss 80's gaming.
