You are right, I don't want to count instructions. The reason I stated MIPS is two fold: 1) the pricing model for IBM high end mainframes (HW, SW, Maint.) is solely MIPS (aka MSU) based and 2) I am curious how his 'math' compares the raw processing capability between S390/Alpha/Intel/PPC microprocessor based systems. I want to see the real cost vs workload numbers. I think that workload (eg static HTTP webserving vs secure ecommerce) will be the primary factor in the comparison of performance and cost when deciding which HW platform to choose. Once again, show me the numbers!
Let's see your math... I would like to know your S/390 $/MIPS assumptions for hardware, software and maintenance. I would also like to see how you compared S/390 MIPS vs Intel/Alpha/PowerPC. Come on, show us.
No, Linux runs native on "raw S/390 iron"... it also runs in a S/390 Logical Parition (LPAR) and also under VM. Three operational options... same exact Linux code. Check out http://www10.software.ibm.com/developerworks/opens ource/linux390/ for more details.
