i have the exact same setup... i've explained it the great advantages to everyone else in my family sharing my last name, yet none of them were interested.
i think that stems from them not understanding what is really going on with the domain. they have to trust me to understand that, and they would rather trust an ISP... even though i do this for a living... not really sure, but they all argue "i already have email that works"...
firstname@lastname.com doesn't appeal to others as much as it seems to be the perfect solution to me.
