I hope this will be a wake up call for the IT industry to understand that patents are NOT their friend.
Now, many of the biggest companies in the IT industry has supported this kind of patent-everything-even-if-common-sense-and-obvious way of doing things, because they think it's in their advantage, as they have the legal resources to defend themselves. For example Microsoft has been a very strong proponent of pushing the EU governments to change their patent system to become the same type of joke as in the US.
However, they are wrong.
Patents are like Nuclear Weapons.
With the difference, that *anybody* can have them.
Now, imagine if the world is full of nuclear weapons, not just a few major states, but every jack, joe, or your nearest fanatic terrorist.
Yup... If the terrorist tries to blow up your country, you're a static target. You can't hide, you have everything to lose.
However, if a large country wants to use their nuclear weapons to kill a terrorist..... Yup... no luck, unless they'd be willing to nuke the *whole world* into oblivion (including themselves).
Patents are like that. The ones who will *really* gain from it, is the junk patent industry, which has been growing like mad this last years.
Those are companies that just create patents, not in order to use them to create or market products or services, but just to blackmail other companies into paying them some protection money, or be sued and have to spend a ridiculous amount of money in court, even if they were sure to win. And since such companies do not have any real businesses or products, they can't even be sued back from patent breachs, so the target's arsenal of patents becomes as useless as the US nuclear weapons would be useless if a terrorist detonated a nuclear weapon there.
Big companies like Microsoft and IBM are just a few of the fattest cash cow in those people's hunting grounds.
I hope this will make them understand that patents are not their friend anymore then it's the little inventor's friends, and that this mess will get sorted out soon.
Well, i don't know if woman are really worse at maths than men or not, but it is a proven fact that woman think differently than men.
There were some test where by giving woman and men some different tasks, and had them do the tasks while doing a brain scan.
The scans showed that different areas of the brain were used by woman than by men when doing the same tasks.
Of course, the fact that most woman seem to be less attracted to math might have nothing to do with it, and might might purely be social, but there do are differences.
And there's nothing wrong with being different... Woman are known to generally handle multi-tasking much better than men, among other things
By working so much their productivity is actually much worse than it would normally be if they worked half the hours, which any *good* IT manager knows.
However many firms employ manager who have no clue about what programming is about, and who think of it as repetitive manual labour, which can be 'sweat-shopped'.
Just clueless management basically... If I was a EA shareholder I would very unhappy because this kind of gross incompetence in management causes serious to the company.
Maybe not the "Open Source" that most OS fanatics have come to preach, which has to be "Free Beer, fork and redistribute at will"
But the sources are freely available from Sun. There do are restrictions, which in short are that you can't run a modified JVM in a production environment. But for any kind of research purpose ( finding bugs, security flaws, experimenting new techniques ), the Sun JVM is no different than the Linux Kernel !!!
They can try all they... they can put all the DRM in the hardware, slap people with the DMCA if they try to work around it, that will only succeed in the doing 2 things:
1) [maybe] Raise awareness of the evil of the DMCA, and finally get it reversed.
2) [surely] Give huge competitive advantages to foreign companies that will start selling non-DRM enabled hardware.
Nowadays, how many MP3 players do you see out there, and how many proprietary DRM-Only players can you find ?
Also, how many non-US governments will tolerate having their hardware totally locked and at the mercy of an US corporation ?
You only really have to worry about scaling if you have a HUGE project.
Now if you do have a huge project, PHP doesn't even hold a candle to J2EE due to lack of features like JTA ( distributed transactions ), and all the rack of clustering capabilities of J2EE.... But even more importantly, PHP is nowhere as MAINTAINABLE as Java, which is just as important ( if not *more* )

Language neutrality.... Honestly that ideia that came out of MS marketing makes me laught...
I won't even go into the argument on how they had to change VB to make it almost like C#....
Simply the fact that in any real world company, one of the most important things is MAINTAINABILITY. A company will standardize on some kind of technology. They don't want to have applications made in languages only a few people around know. Irrelevantly of how good any of those languages are, nobody wants to be responsable for applications written in VB, Java, Smalltalk, Eifel and Cobol....

Actually Java *is* open source.

This is pointless discussion.
