  1. free games on Full GPL Game Company - Nevrax · · Score: 2
"Their business model makes a lot of sense: they won't sell CDs, they will sell access to the massively multiplayer server".

I have to be skeptical of this business model, as its VERY difficult to create a successful video game without publisher assistance, and good marketing. The best they can hope for is word of mouth amongst game players, but its still difficult to pull off. That and their competition is games like Everquest and Neverwinter Nights, etc.. games which have large budgets

I'd be interested to know how they plan on funding this GPL'd game without publisher assistance, and if they did get a publisher, they would definately want it taken off the GPL license. GPL is a good thing, but to make a successful good game, and I truley believe that thats where softwear is heading, unfortunaletly, publishers (suits) still think of giving away software source code as an extremely bad thing.

"Yes, it is almost completely pointless."

I don't agree. Motion blur and its core concept have many possibilities, that would apply to FPS's, and every genre for that matter. The principle of having hardware that optimizes FSAA, can lead to a lot of really kool tricks. One such trick is demonstrated in the Elsa 3d glasses, which renders the scene in numerous passes to create the illusion of a 3d monitor(like the red/blue glasses in comics/movies). That is easily the most amazing thing I have ever seen, and is easily worth the extra cycles. That would be one direct application to FPS's for motion blur.

Another thing you said is when you take a screenshot, it looks totally amazing, but actual gameplay is unnoticable. Did you consider that not all FPS's are totally action packed such as Q3? I can think of a number of FPS's played where the majority of gameplay spent is wandering around (most are quake licensees).

I agree with Chris's post, in that practically every game would so greatly benefit from the use of polygon smoothing. The visual quality and number potential coding tricks associated with it would be astounding.
