Which is almost triple on data CD's.

Technically the plan is to 'tax' at the corporate level, so the company that imports or manufactures in Canada would pay. The consumer would only see a price increase no tax. So in effect it would be hidden from consumers.

Interesting side effect is that the sales taxes would be applied on top of this. So the government gets an extra 15% (varies depending on what province you are in) on top of the proposed amounts.

I do believe the amount of piracy is a problem but I do not think that such a increase is in order. This is also not a solution.

Yes, its already there and has been for a long time. I beleive another somebody already posted the current amounts.

Products that are turnkey already exist and would be FAR more reliable than some kludge. So get a off the shelf solution that is designed to do exactly what you want. Here are two units that I have seen and know to be pretty damn dependable and have been around for a few years. I hazard to guess both have been used as evidence in the courts by now.

Panasonic WJ-HD500AV - Digital Hard Drive Recorder with Built-in 16 CH Multiplexer
    here's a link: http://cctv.panasonic.com/showcase.asp

    Sony HSR2
    here's a link: http://bpgprod.sel.sony.com/bpcnav/app/99999/16/11 6/58243.10001.product.BPC.html

Both units provide built in 16 camera multiplexor with the record/live monitoring features, water marking, schedules, motion detection, etc.

Afer getting a good recorder you probably also will want to get decent camera's that are appropriate for your lighting conditions, or get better lighting. It's hard to say which is more cost effective but having good images is the point of the whole exercise and 'doing it cheap' could be as effective as not doing it at all.

I would point out that the two recorder's are merely two that I have hands on experience with and from companies that have been around in CCTV for some time. These two are by no means the only choices, as some others have posted, there are a number of choices for equipment designed specifically to meet your needs and are well worth the price.

Over at Tom's they did some benchmarks using this card. When the extra SCSI like features are added there are some real gains (striping).

Two things that I can almost guarantee are going to be in the ISP contract:

    1. They are not liable for damages beyond refunding any amounts paid for service. Even if it says they are not that would probably be what you could would get if you kick up a stink.

    2. They reserve the right to discontinue service for pretty much anything they deem to be 'unsuitable content' and also anything that interferes with their ability to serve other customers.

Last time I shopped for an ISP I read the service contracts in their entirety. I cut most off my list of choices on the contracts alone. I deal with a number of service companies and one thing I highly recommend is that people actually read the contracts (preferable before they sign them). There are a lot of clauses that a salesman will gloss over that may mean nothing until you have a problem.

I am sure the people who put up the 57 mil would be real happy with tossing 10 mil down the toilet. The Linux craze has calmed down to more reasonable levels. Investors are not going to be throwing money at these companies like in the past.

After all if they gave 4 week severance packages it is not likely that they will be rehiring in the near future. Laying people off is never fun but running too fat is just bad business.

Probably worth mentioning that anybody working in this industry would not have much trouble finding a job in 4 weeks.

  10. Crystal clear non issue on Borland C++ Can No Longer Be Used To Make Free Software? · · Score: 2

    Sigh,

I first read about this in the Borland newsgroups, and thought what a bunch of idiots, even in the tidbit posted in the quote at the start is says,

"You may reproduce and distribute, in executable form only, programs which you create using the Software without additional license or fees, subject to all of the conditions in this License Agreement."

Now this actually says you can give stuff away, and there are further conditions, which of course
were totally ignored by almost everybody commenting here not to mention the original poster. So to read on in the Borland C Builder 5.0 (not the freebie the full blown package),

"All Inprise libraries, source code, Redistributables and other files remain Inprise's exclusive property. Regardless of any modifications that you make, you may not distribute any files (particularly Inprise source code and other non-executable files) except those that Inprise has
expressly designated as Redistributables. Nothing in the License Agreement permits you to derive the source code of files that Inprise has provided to you in executable form only, or to reproduce, modify, use, or distribute the source code of such files. You are not, of course, restricted from distributing source code or byte code that is entirely your own. Source code which you generate with an Inprise source code generator, such as an Application Wizard, is considered by Inprise to be your code."

So not only is the code you make yours and freely distributable but ALSO the machine generated code as well. The full Borland C Builder package comes with quite a but of source that is owned by Borland/Inprise and they obviously don't want that to be given out.

I think that in future it would be very helpful to the /. readers if links to or the full text of these licences was posted along with the original post. If that was the case here this who discussion would have been a total non-issue. This was not even a 'misinterpetation' since the topic is clearly covered in the agreement in plain english.

"You are not, of course, restricted from distributing source code or byte code that is entirely your own."

How much clearer can it get.

'Does Open Source Separate Business From Technology?'

Do bears sh!t in the woods? Business drives technology, each is separate but innovation of technology is brought about by the competitive business environment. Take a look at the level of technology in countries that did not have business driving them.

'Could it be possible that, with the shift from marketing software to marketing services, the business suits are being forced out of the technology pipeline?'

To a 'suit' marketing services or software is no different. Sure the pitch may be altered somewhat but in the end it is just the same. In the current market the cost of purchase is often irrelevant when compared to the cost of support. Annual support contracts have been a long time staple in lots of business sectors not just the IT sector.

'If IT businesses shift to providing services, will the suits, which historically make software releases buggy, bloated, and premature, be taken out of the decision process? Without a suit forcing an unready software release, it only makes sense that software will get better and better.'

The 'suits' provide the capital to setup and run IT businesses, capital or ownership is where the root of all decisions, or the ultimate point of control.

The blame for bloated buggy and premature software cannot be placed solely on the shoulders of 'suits'. In general, the blame can be placed equally on both the 'suits' and the programmers. The 'suits' usually base their expectations on what some programmer has told them. The software would not be premature if development was on schedule. In a industry where 2-3 years of experience amounts to 'senior' positions it is no surprise that time estimates are not very accurate. Sure specifications may change which also adds time, either way the blame (in general) can be spread around to all parties involved.
Even the consumer can shoulder some of the blame for purchasing 'bad' software hence companies release product that is just 'good enough'.

Requiring real knowledge of the OS is just a barrier to real wide spread use. The whole reason the web has taken off is because it became so easy to use (point and click). The average consumer does not want to have to think about how his PC works, he just wants it to do what he tells it with no problems.
