As the person within my group of friends who finds I all the new music I resent your statement that I am a bit unstable. I feel I am an intelligent and well-adjusted member of society. Now if you'll excuse me I have to go fall asleep listening to death metal and cry myself to sleep.
In all seriousness though, there are a couple things you can do to easily find new music. 1) Actually talk to people about music. Even if they like a different type of music than you. It never hurts to try something new. 2) This is the internet. There are millions of places to discuss solely music. I have a lot of success with 420chan, find something that works for you. 3) Find an internet radio station that caters to your tastes. Try to make it something with a lot of variety. Personally I like Split Infinity radio as it plays a nice blend of metal, classic rock, and techno. 4) Spend some time on iTunes or Amazon looking at the "Listeners Also Bought" sections. Download a couple. Listen to entire albums, not just hits. 5) Don't confine yourself to new music. Just because a band is old doesn't mean you can't discover them now. Personally I had never listened to any Pink Floyd other than Dark Side of the Moon. I'm now in love with Wish You Were Here.
In the spirit of this advice: http://www.prettylightsmusic.com/#/home My current favorite band, all their music free for download off their website. Give it a listen.
