Have you ever done or seen any research on this? I have -- and there are plenty of people who will pay for software when there's not an easier or more convenient way *for them* of getting it for free. But if getting a pirated copy is easier then that's what they'll do.
What right does anyone have other than the right-holder to determine if infringing the copyright is ok?

The above statement isn't quite true. If someone cancels or declines the update it will NOT automatically tell them that their software is not genuine. In the case that the copy of Windows is not activated the customer will be advised to activate their copy.
