  1. Re:why not on Where Does Spam Come From? No, Really? · · Score: 3, Insightful

Problem is, the spammer probably isn't getting bounce messages. They fake a reply-to or stick in someone else's address, so all the error messages go to /dev/null or some innocent person's mailbox.

There are a bunch of scripts out there that will do what you are looking for. To wit:

    Sugarplum: SPAM poison

Searches for stuff like "spam harvest poison script" should turn up more. There are also honeypots and tarpits designed to mire SPAMmers attempts to pump out spam by acting like an open relay, but sending back fake success messages with delays to slow down their progress.

The thing that gets me is that SPAMmers know everyone hates them, and they do all this underhanded harvesting, address spoofing, attempts to get around filtering, etc. If they would simply put "ADV:" at the start of their message header, we could all set up filters and not get so annoyed. I know since my annoyance level has increased I report each and every SPAM I get via SpamCop, and cackle with delight when I see their websites shut down in short order.

The long-awaited TiVo HDTV is on it's way.

I'd also recommend checking out the various forums at the TiVo Community Forums, where discussion about the HDTV models has been underway. There are some very knowledgeable folks there.

While it requires an additional purchase, the TiVo Series 2 units have USB ports and can download guide data via the net with the addition of a cheap ethernet USB adapter. The box is ready with the drivers-- plug it in, modify the call settings, and go.

The TiVo Series 1 units can be outfitted with a TurboNet adapter, giving a 100Mbps connection for retreiving guide data and other things (*cough* ExtractStream *cough*). AirNet is also available...

  4. Solution: Never buy technology. on Slate Predicts The End Of TiVo · · Score: 2, Insightful

What a load of FUD. What's his solution? Buy nothing? Use a VCR as a poor solution? Wait until 2005 when cable companies will supposedly rule the market with integrated PVR/cable box systems?

No matter what happens, I have had plenty of use from my TiVo and I can't imagine watching TV without it. I think I have watched live TV twice since I purchased my unit many moons ago.

Come on, Koerner, it's called technology. I had a C= 64, and an Amiga 1000. I used the heck out of them. Early adopter? What was I supposed to do, buy nothing? Or an Apple //e or a Apple //gs? Last time I checked, there wasn't a very big user base for those, either. Too bad he didn't pine on Betamax, the laserdisc, minidisc, or any of the other technologies many people still consider superior to their peers and still use today.

We're tech savvy people. We will pay for good technology. We don't wait around for generations of a product to come out, since we know a better one is always going to come out. Technology goes stale. It's part of the game. I don't care if someone wants to hide in the corner, afraid to buy technology because they think like this guy. I'll be sitting there, with my latest geek toy, enjoying it until it's time for an upgrade.

    Howzabout:

net send administrator "Your web server is compromised..."

That should pop a message up to a console the admin has logged on to, if the messenger service is running and if they're using the Administrator account (which is likely, they have unpatched IIS boxes hanging out there, eh?).

A more drastic approach would be to spam all workstations with the same command, but I will leave that as an exercise to the reader.

Yes, and where you have an unpatched IIS install, you often get a wide-open FTP server running as well. It's been making for some interesting browsing.
