Since I have my cable modem (only about a T1 worth of bandwidth unfortunately) I am the primary MX host for email addressed to anyone on my LAN. Should the cable modem infrastructure break down then I have some secondary MX receivers that have better connectivity than I have, to temporarily buffer the email.
What makes you think you need 100 Mbps to receive email?;-)
Yes, this is possible, there is software out there to make it feasible, for example something like Autonomy. In fact when I was on a training with that company last week they freely admitted having sold their product to some unnamed British intelligence agency...
