Yea, if you need, we can get back to you with whatever legal information you need. Our system is most certainly centralized. It's really the only logical option. We know what O is, and we respect her. Let me just add.. We are a Zero VC company, thats right, $0.00 VC, we have no investors, and to date have only spent some $10,000 out of pocket on hardware and bandwidth. That pretty much makes us one of the most successful internet companies around. :) -James

  3. Certainly Central Server on New P2P tool Using... IRC? [UPDATED] · · Score: 2

I can't understand why anyone would say this system does not use a centralized server, it most certainly does, and it's IRC. Remove access to IRC, and the system no longer works. However, I don't disagree that its not an innovative solution to the problem. We used IRC for a similar purpose from around 1990 to 1993. We wrote an encrypted protocal using IRC as a network connection point for our chat systems. It allowed us to link remote chat systems without having to pay phone bills. We basically hacked user accounts on university systems to gain access. Was around the the time pc-pursuit went down. If anyone was around back then the chat system/bbs was STS-12, and in case anyone was wondering, the channel was #freedom. Anyhow, the only real way to do this efficiently and reliably is with a central server based system. We did alot of research on Gnutella and non-server based networks, and we came to the conclusion that while it works great if the point of the system is anonymity and piracy/copyright fraud, it just doesn't work in any business models. "We" are the engineering crew at http://www.splooge.com, a new (beta) media-sharing application. Don't really want to use this as my own advertisement system, but check it out, we've spent a tremendous amount of time on it.

  4. Seems like a good thread to throw this into on Emusic Tracking MP3s On Napster · · Score: 1

A few days ago I posted a little teaser about Splooge. Anyone reading these threads would certainly be interested in this. We're currently looking for some beta testers for Splooge. We'll allow about 200 downloads before we take the beta download offline again. If anyone would like help us out and give it a try, it can be downloaded from www.splooge.com. Unfortunately, this is a Win app only at this time, a java client is in the works, however, development has been focused on the Win client. Any comments. concerns, or offers to work for free can be addressed to me at jbednar@splooge.com . Thanks! And no, despite the name, we're not a porn p2p engine. However... now that I think about it, thats not a half bad idea at all...

  5. Other options in the pipeline on Scour is Dead · · Score: 1

Maybe my comments here are a little premature, but myself, and a few other developers have been working on a peer-to-peer media sharing application that goes under the name Splooge. (www.splooge.com). We've been working on the project part time for a few months, and we are on the verge of releasing our first beta. We were very discouraged when the rash of file sharing apps hit the market, the last thing we wanted was to be thought of as just jumping on the bandwagon. But, since Napster and Gnu are really the only viable apps out (I know there are many many more), we've decided to quicken the pace and get a product to market. The site is up, and we have a small beta group testing our release, so we should have a working product in the next few weeks. Hopefully a few folks will get to use it before we get sued and shut down :). On the brighter side, if there are any record companies looking to partner with us, we'd love to entertain. On other note, we've tried to cater to all media and data types, not simply music (mp3), and video mpg. In an attempt to protect ourselves, we've built quite a bit of control into our backend, so we can limit the files users are sharing. Keep a look out! Sucks about the Scour thing, it really was a killer app.
