for all those looking for more info, check out the lab's homepage http://fossil.wpi.edu. and also a little thanks to prof finkel for making the last project NOT involve a thousand reboots.
Sorry Yahoo, but you are violating French law. It doesn't matter whether or not the law is good or not (I personally think it's bad, but then again, it's not my country so I don't get a say), Yahoo is sitll in violation. Just like it is illegal to mail order fireworks to be shipped to a state where they are illegal, its illegal for Yahoo to provide a means for French citizens to buy Nazi junk. It Yahoo's responsibility to not allow the French to buy the stuff, and and no amount of first amendment bullshit is going to get around French law.
it amazes me at how many stupid people there are on slashdot. If you want a computer to drive external monitors and such and you want it of the apple variety, get a G3 or G4 tower. The iMac isn't suppose to be a nerd/geek computer overclocked to 15 jillion mhz.. it's a consumer device for godsake. Aimed at people who don't want to even think about programming or doind anything on a computer that matter except for surfing the web and sending email. This is why is doesn't have removable media, IT DOESN'T NEED IT. All these companies (like Be) are trying to come out with killer internet appliances. Apple already has. It's called the iMac. Slashdotters, get a clue. The iMac isn't designed for you, it's designed for the general Joe Blow who needs to get on the net. And for $999, the iMac does a hell of a lot better job at being a inet appliance then any wintel box could hope to. With a nice, simple to use OS (despite its problems, MacOS will never be considered difficult) and those pretty colors, the iMac will never be as intimating as anything from the wintel side of the fence.
Interesting to read this thinking about Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy (which is you haven't read it is probably the greatest work of sci-fi this decade). On Robinson's Mars, the gift culture developed because people needed to rely on one another to survive... I wonder if not a simmilar reason has forced Academic Computing in general, and Unix (and it's brethern) in particular to also develop the gift culture we so lovingly call open source. It also interensting to note that the gift culture on Mars grew up in opposition to the big metacorps that originally held the power... can anyone here say Microsoft?
Galileo was one of the first flamers.. this is why the Church got upset with him, he wouldn't go quietly. If he were around today, Galileo would be posting on slashdot and have most of his stuff moderated down to -20.
Gee, all we need is a few laws of robotics, and katz' porblem is solved. If he's goning to write about one scifi author, he really should give them all equal credit.
how many of the 1337 script kiddies who read Slashdot now'days even know hwat rot13 is? -Zvxr Eboregf (jub qbrf:)
