I totally agree with you. I started with PHP only because it was so easy to start.
Tried RoR before PHP, but I lost at the begining. Didn't knew what to install, what now, what then, where am I. Then I give up and wrote first php line.
If this iOS-ification of OS X continues, i will swich to linux too. Windows is big no-no, simply this is not even close to my ideal desktop OS.
But it's not yet time to switch to Linux, we can survive with Snow Leopard or Montain Lion a few more years with no problem I think.
