  1. Shifting dimensions on Gravity Diluted By Multiple Dimensions? · · Score: 1
It would seem that dimensions also shift with respect to each other, so the gravitational force acting through a set space within our dimension doesn't act through a constant number of other dimensions. It's related to the alignment of the sun and earth with respect to the set space. If the sun is on the opposite side of the planet, some of the extra dimensions are drawn away, only gradually returning as the alignment changes. While there are less dimensions occupying the space, the apparent gravitational force, relative to our dimension, is increased. And this is why it's so hard for me to get out of bed on a morning.

Who'll be the next on the Moon?

We've been discussing this over morning coffees here at work. We think that there'd be enough public support in the UK to raise money to send a manned mission to the moon for the sole purpose of replacing the American flag with a Union Jack.

However, knowing the state of industry in the UK, no doubt the rockets would be German built. Ho hum.

  3. I don't know about cyberbodies, but... on Second Coming of Technology · · Score: 1
This concept of being able to use any computer and have access to your own stuff is interesting. I'm reminded of a tech support story I once read where a novice user had their own concept of how networked computers worked. The user had logged in, using their own username and password, on someone else's computer. They were complaining that files and folders on the desktop were missing and they couldn't find their files on the C: drive, because when logged in as themselves, they expected to see their stuff. The tech was having a laugh about it, but it would be quite useful if that's what the computer did.

It sounds like this is what that "cyberbodies" concept is about. The ability to log into any machine and see your own personal files/data. There have been many times when I've realised wanted a file from my home pc on my work pc or vice versa, ending up transferring it by email, floppy or CD. If the communications links were faster it would make more sense to store everything I currently store on my local HD on a remote server, and use the local HD as a cache. I wouldn't have to worry about buying and installing a new 30Gb drive - I'd just up my quota with the remote storage company. I wouldn't have to worry about backing up valuable data to CDs in case of the HD failing, because the storage company would do that for me. I'd be able to log on from any machine on the internet and it would be "my computer", as I left it earlier, from another terminal.

There are obvious drawbacks to this, though. Could I see a windows desktop from a Mac? Could I see a Mac desktop from an Acorn? Would all the platform specific files and settings coexist as required? Or maybe - eek! - a single common OS/hardware configuration needs to be adopted. Which is a whole other argument and I'm staying clear of it this morning!

I can't see it either, but for a different reason. IE decides the best app for the job is MusicMatch JukeBox, which - after thinking about it for a while - tells me that the file format is invalid. You know, it's stuff like this that makes me want to resign my geekdom. The day-star is shining brightly outside and I may just go for a closer look.

Anyone know what the odds actually are of it being hit? I can imagine even a small hit tearing a hole in the sail causing the propulsion to be uneven, spinning the craft and sending it in the wrong direction.

And further to this, what if it approached another sun? I suppose it would have to drop the sail and coast the rest of the way, or rely on conventional thrusters. Having said that, in reality it's still going rather slow and it would still take far too long to reach any other solar systems. Anyone done the maths as to how long it would take?

Agreed... Hotmail does this quite well. One of the main reasons I set up a Hotmail account in the first place was for all those site and software registrations that require you to add an email address. Ones that I don't entirely trust or are going to be made public. Emails in Hotmail's "bulk mail" folder are automatically deleted after 30 days and having deliberately left mine to fill, it has now settled at around 320 emails - emails that otherwise would be finding their way to my main email address. Scary thought!

Just those that arrived yesterday... lol

If it's the same series I'm thinking of, they quite frequently had a chance of getting home, but then had to go back because one of them was stuck or bad things would happen in the real world... any of a thousand excuses. Was there an end to the story? Did they ever get back home, permanently, no strings attached?

Anyway, I much preferred Cities of Gold and Ulysses 31. I even caught an episode of Mr Benn on tv yesterday... ah, happy, carefree days!
