Will the ability to steal something prevent anyone for ever again charging for their product? This means either 2 things: no product or products inundated with advertisements, proprietary formats, playback control, et cetera.

The $3.95 price is a little steep for 32 minutes - sounds like a short film not a full-fledged movie. OTOH, this is a PURCHASE not a RENTAL. But I do hope when electronic distriubution for profit comes around, people can show more responsibility. This, of course, assumes that media companies show more responsibility. Perhaps even first by keeping their hands off the playback mechanisms and avoiding proprietary formats (software) and focusing on the media. It also wouldn't hurt if they learned how to price things.

"Everyone that has something useful to say gets an account!" This is untrue. As I see it, the only benefit to an account is setting up preferences and creating continuity if it is desired. Many people are "readers" not posters (or posers) and they only contribute when they have something useful to say with no desire or motiviation to have their comments permanently linked to them. Then they're idiots like me that blather on and on and on about anything.

A lot of times people post AC because they don't even want to be ID'd with their login name.

A better system might be to give every registered user 1 moderation point (maybe 2 if you are really good) per thread. This way they can mod up 1 of their own posts to 1. If their post can stand on its own, they can use the point(s) however. If they post 10 times in a single thread, only one or two of those posts gets the +1 throw.

I've gone from AC to AE and the only that has changed is less usage of the word "fuck". Oops.

Should vendors be liable if their software is incompatible with a 3rd party driver or some POS peripherial??? Computers are far too complex and too many things unrelated directly to the software can go wrong.

Who do you sue if a sound card-OS interaction crashes the system? I bet I could design a sound card that crashes a computer. You have parts from maybe 2 dozen or more different vendors and you want to blame the software maker?

How's this for a "solution"? You want a guarantee? Then you run the software on hardware and with a configuration of the providers selection with no unauthorized software or hardware! And only certified professionals can touch the machine.

"Another loss for us, a loss for the consumer."

I could be wrong, but doesn't slashdot have a higher percentage of software providers (coders) than say readers of CNN.com? The ability to limit your liability is essential in these lawsuit-happy times with skyrocketing rewards. If you want a guarantee, then find a provider that gives you one. Alternatively, insurance can be used judicially.

If every piece of code sold OR DISTRIBUTED for any price had to be liable, then it is the slashdot community most likely to suffer. Liability would stifle code distribution and you wouldn't put your name on anything for fear of lawsuits. "Buyer Beware" is also a tennant of capitalism and in this case, the license clearly states the liability limits. I don't know what your rights are to get money back of a shrinkwrap "license", but I'd think it should be the case that you can get your money back BEFORE using the software. That's a horse of a different color.

Your post was actually dead on. The problems here are not technological. They are legal. Even if a company goes belly-up, they're IP does not become public domain. It will most likely be held idle by liquidators until some other company can purchase it. Even if its bought to be buried. Thus, there is the very real possibility of losing the RIGHT to access this material once its officially offline. Or at an online publisher's whim if they put out something embarassing.

By controlling the playback mechanism, it won't be long before they can legally require you to pay for every play, or inform them that you are playing the media. Guobblemints and corporations BOTH want this.

Think back to the Lewinsky/Clinton impeachment trial and ask yourself if you want all of your media viewing habits disclosed at your next civil/criminal/divorce/custody court hearing. Even if they keep info out of the marketers hands, if the info exists in databases, the judge can demand it.
