In fact, the main problem is which definition of "criminal" the government apply. A criminal for you is probably "someone who harms other people's interests". For the government, it can also be "someone who harms the status quo's interests" (i.e. especially power elites'). The difference may seem subtle but in fact it's critical.

A very interesting book on this subject is Divided societies : class struggle in contemporary capitalism from Ralph Miliband (Oxford University Press, 1991).

No one really wants kids to easily see hard core porn, do they?

I must say I don't get this point. After all, porn only (usually) shows people having sex (even if it sometimes look very dirty *grin*). What's the problem with this ? I mean, is it worse than showing people killing other people for the Nation, or for God, or (name a so-called "noble" cause here) ? Aren't these materials available to children ? Yes, often they are, and rightfully so.

I think there are more important things to do than deny to our children the access to resources considered harmful in our current society.

Let the old "Labor Movement" fossils dry up and die. We don't need them.

Unfortunately for you, don't think that the current shortage in skilled IT people will last forever... The money we get in that field is so hyped that many people who would have completely ignored this subject two or three years ago are now following courses and will soon enter the market. And companies are now training people from other backgrounds themselves to save on wages.

We had a lecture on it, as an example of ODs, and we had some practical work using it, on Linux.

Of course I didn't use it enough to tell you what it's really worth...
