The fact of the matter is that they will end up developing some stupid format which only works on microsoft OS's, and is more throuble than it is worth to break. What they can not do is stop producing CD's for people that want to play music in their car or those old diskman floating around.... they can't change the CD format. what they also can't do is stop someone from hooking the output from their stereo into the input of their sound card. they'll try out-lawing mp3 encoders, but they will always be out there.
Ever try creating a wap page? no, well it sucks. crate one page and it looks and behaves completely different on the nokia browser compared the the phone.com browser. shouldn't these companies havelearned from the IE/Netscape mess that this is a BAD THING!
I managed to steal a copy of Operating system design and implementation rom some crappy tech school with the original minix source code in the back - totally sweet
I work for a growing wireless web company. we find ourselves in the position wher we need to how a possible client an example of just what our technology can do. the only problem is that we do not have live weather, or stock feeds. so we substituted that with some hand writen scraping tools. basically what we have done is provide a more user friendly interface to someone elses data. This is in the best interest of the customer, that being the web browser, but that brings up the question - is a web browser one sites customer at a time. Also isn't scraping data and displaying it in a different format the same as a windowing system allowing you to tuck the part of a webpage with a banner on it out of view under another window. does this mean that the information put out by a web site can only be viewed in ONE format? if so, then which format is correct? is netscape more 'propper' than internet explorer?
I especially like the offensive nature of the 'questions'. One might expect a bunch of legal crap as a formal response, but it appears that even Andovers lawers understand that this is not necesarily a web site vs. Microsoft. it is a website standing up for the free nature of the internet, and could even be doing a part to support the U.S. vs. Microsoft case. I am glad to see comments such as the first and second which really have nothing to do with Slashdot at all.
what is the point of getting a pretty car, or a nice coffee table, or a stainless steel refrigerator opposed to just generic ones... it makes life a bit more exciting. it makes your surroundings more appealing. not all of life is dependant upon processor cycles, or ram. there are aspects to life other than performance.

I'd like to know whether apple is going to try and modify its kernel along with the updates to BSD.

By the time my kid is 4 I wan him or her to know how to count to 255 in binary
netscape is a robot. it just does all of the 'gathering' on the client side opposed to a remote server.
Slashdot does not take other peoples copy and process it at all. they take quotes just like an other journalistic site.
