  1. Responsibility? on New Controversy over Black Hat Presentation · · Score: 5, Insightful

From the article: "These systems are installed all over the place. It's not just HID, but lots of companies, and there hasn't been a problem. Now we've got a person who's saying let's get publicity for our company and show everyone how to do it, and it puts everyone at risk. Where's the sense of responsibility?" Carroll said.
This blows me away. Rather than taking the responsibility for having a flawed security system, rather than having the responsibility as a company to say "Hey, yeah we know about this and we are going to fix it after 15 years," the company accuses the security researcher of a lack of responsibility for "revealing" how to exploit these systems. I feel like bizarro world has become the real world when I read these kind of comments.

  2. Likelihood of selling out? on Download Only Song to Crack the Top 40 · · Score: 3, Interesting

Probably slim, considering the lyrics of the music being anti-sellout...

Unless they're REALLY hypocritical, which is always possible I suppose.

    *takes off his tinfoil hat*

Maybe it is conspiratorial of me to make that suggestion but really... why else would they do it? I can't think of any security or stability reasons, unless their handling of S800 devices is so terrible that it can't keep up.

The only plausible reason in my mind is that Microsoft has some sort of problem with 1394 and because they have the market share to do so, they are able to cripple it into non-usefulness.

  4. Patch? Fix? on XP Service Pack 2 Breaks FireWire · · Score: 2, Informative

Not fixed in a patch or released as a hotfix, but their 'fix' is for the person affected to edit their registry. Your average user is not going to want to edit their registry.

As far as the competition angle... USB is intel's protocol, firewire is largely driven by apple... that was my point about competition.

The real issue here is taht Ms's monopoly allows them to crush a protocol if they so desire.

  6. boblbee on Advice On Notebook Backpacks? · · Score: 1

I have a http://www.boblbee.com/ Boblbee Megalopolis Executive. It easily fits the 15" powerbook, and my 17" fits but not perfectly because the velcro strap can't reach around it. (their website says use IE but it mostly works in firefox and mozilla, and safari...)

This backpack is hardshell, with really nice padded straps and the part that sits on your back is nicely padded. There is also a lumba rsupport on the backpack which is really nice for walking. If you expect to get any benefit out of the lumbar, you will want the waist strap.

The only drawback to this backpack is the price, at $140 (I got mine from a discounr retailer,) it is pricey.

Another nice thing about these is they are very uncommon and you do get looks and comments if you are into that sort of thing. mine's matte black but I imagine you'd get a lot more comments with the chrome one!

There are also a number of accessories that go with it, including an overnight organizer with space for a change of clothes, etc.

    A really great backpack.

  7. Making an old laptop into a picture frame on Creative Recycling: Dumpster Diving · · Score: 2, Interesting

I've done this now about 4 times, using old laptops and it really does get some great coments when people see it on your wall...

A friend of mine has been trying to get me to sell these things but I don't want to support them!

maybe if I get some time I will put together a howto, as I've discovered a lot of things in doing it...

You definitely don't want to take the entire laptop apart, it's easiest just to remove the screen from it's hinges and flip it over and remount it in it's own hinges, then mount the entire laptop on the back of the frame!

also, I've found using X is a waste of resources. SVGAlib works well! I will take some pictures sometime soon... you're welcome to visit my site to see if I've posted them!

It was wonderful to see it on the big screen... I went out and bought it at my local Japanese animation import shop right after the movie...

Definitely an enjoyable movie but it was out here more than a month and a half ago, so this doesn't seem the most current news...
