  1. Would this allow smaller microchips? on Negative Index of Refraction Created · · Score: 1

Chip manufacturing technology will soon run up against the physical boundaries imposed by the wavelength of light. As you probably know, chips are printed through the magnification of short-wavelength (ultraviolet) light. The problem is that circuts are now almost the the width of the wavelength of ultraviolet. Chip manufacture will (before too long), run up against a brick wall. So, the question is, will this ability to focus radiation allow the development of an X-Ray magnifying glass? Shorter wavlengths=smaller circuts=faster chips. Ideas?

  2. Trust the Source, Luke on NSA Inside? · · Score: 1
If the NSA ever releases the code, it will probably be the most thoroughly examined code in history. I have every confidence that our intrepid kernel hackers will find anything the NSA tries to sneak in.

That said, having a government agency that is extremely security aware submitting patches is a SCARY thing, but not for the reason you think. I can hear the Microsoft marketing machine cranking up now to spread the FUD: "Linux is now receiving submissions from the NSA, the government agency responsible for protecting National Security. Make sure you don't put your tax records on Linux!"

  5. Perl community is what makes it a great language on Damian Conway Sponsored · · Score: 1

I had the great privilege to attend Dr. Conway's Quantum::Superpositions talk at the UofPerl in Seattle. He proved himself to be a witty and engaging speaker, and I strongly suggest that you attend any of his talks you can. The perl Community has continued a great tradition here--one of supporting its luminaries not only with kudos, but with cash. How much will Dr. Conway be able to accomplish in his year? I look forward to finding out.

  6. Robots on caffiene on Bouncing Robots Exploring Planets? · · Score: 2

It's easy to get robots to bounce! Just give 'em enough caffiene. I do it all the time here at work... just switch out the decaf, and my useless robotic cow-orkers are repainting the building, talking at 100mph, and yes, bouncing!

Actually, I apologize for my earlier knee-jerk reaction to your (mostly) constructive criticism of Slashdot. My problem is not so much with your questioning the credibility of stories posted here; it is with the incessant griping about "off-topic" posts, in which you really didn't participate. I lumped your post in with the "off-topic" or "not news for nerds" posts too quickly, and it was the proverbial straw. Once again, I am sorry... Now, on to the subject at hand. I think that most serious Slashdot readers would agree that the site's credibilitiy is declining; it may be too hard to find news that wasn't previously posted (actually, this news item was already posted on LWN), it may be just a distraction now from watching Anime, or it may be that there is corporate pressure to be the first out with news; and frankly, I am not really worried about it. I read Slashdot for entertainment purposes. I can often find one or two well-reasoned responses, sometimes to the most inane news items you can imagine, and the fact is that I enjoy reading the thoughts of intelligent people. That, and that alone, is why I come back to slashdot; it is like Coffee Talk; "The French Revolution was neither French, nor a revolution... Discuss!" So what if the topic is crappy? If we still get intelligent, well thought out responses, the site is worth visiting.
