    The author does not have to worry about a percentage of people alive to understand his article, it was written for a very specific audience and they will understand.
    The fact his article leaked to /. and some of our constituency is no longer technically capable is only a curiosity for the amused observer.

    I thought this was a very acceptable way of presenting the relative distance of the occurrence.
    Those in the know can easily convert it to real measurements in their favourite units but for the layman the relative distance is probably easier to grasp.

    At least partially because of the legal hassle they had years ago centred around their monopoly on the x86 platform, ARM does not have that burden.
    They now demand of OEM vendors that UEFI protection can be disabled by the user but it's to be seen they apply the same freedom to their own Surface brand...

    Maybe we'll see MS advertising their own boxes are the safest.

    You are clearly not informed about what Linus said.

    Linus has repeatedly said he prefers FOSS but is OK with blobs when they do their task.
    In this particular interview he was complaining about nVidia's refusal to cooperate on an Optimus solution, something nVidia conveniently omitted from their 'reply'.

    I've got a Thinkpad W520 and must say installing Bumblebee and getting it to work was as simple as following the instructions on their git site.

    Due to the nature of the Bumblebee hack it is not as fast as booting straight into the discrete driver but for most 3D programs it works sufficiently.

    It's proven we can go to the moon, it's a relatively minor step to upgrade the existing and proven technology for robot travel to Mars to enable human travel.
    Why would you stop there?

    The problems here on earth like feeding large parts of the population are political, not technical and that's a big difference...

    You have a very limited view of the future.

    Because of the lower gravity the moon is a potential space port that'll make other space-based ventures much easier.
    When the raw materials to build the equipment for such ventures are also present it becomes even more interesting.

    But you have to be able to understand/appreciate humanity is not ultimately bound to earth.
    As a matter of fact, there is even debate if we (life) originates on this earth!

    It sounds very fair because the other nations have a standard of morale making it very unlikely they would use those weapons in any offensive way.

    The Islamic militants of Iran are, like de crooks in N. Korea, a totally different kettle of fish.

    Yes it is a nice piece of hardware to run a Linux on.

    But we all know the newer Intel chips no longer have a BIOS but instead run UEFI and MS has made it quite clear they'll use it to block any attempts to install unlicensed software.

    So to fully enjoy this machine we'll have to wait till a crack comes out :)

    You have some good tech but strange ideas re. saving on energy.

    Getting rid of excessive heat is to be done by reusing it, not by loosing it into space (or more likely the atmosphere).
    You write about the oil price, the installation of original article is positioned in Germany, one of the many countries that is seriously worried about an irrevocable human effect on the climate also know as the green house effect.
    So Germany has like all other EU countries decided to promote renewable energy and best practises for avoiding waste.

    The way UEFI is implemented on this recent Thinkpad is comparable to a regular BIOS, all is user configurable.

    One single but simple to check reason for some Muslim fanatics to hate the US is the occupation of their second most holy place by Israel and the support Israel gets from the US.

    Any person with access to a (public) library, newspapers, news magazines or the internet can find many more reasons.

    A discussion about the validity of these claims is often difficult but in any case lost on those guys.

    Yes we stay here 24/7.

    I work for a contractor and I have little insight in the contract between my employer and our international client.
    It does not really matter, EU laws are protective of an individuals privacy, my contract is under Dutch law and a company reading my private mail is without very specific permission not allowed.

    Until I go to the UK or US...

    I'm sufficiently happy with Bumblebee doing the Optimus thing (switching between Intel and nVidia) on my Thinkpad W520.

    And the UEFI startup manager allows for selecting the card by hand, no proble.

    Due to perceived abuse (lost time) our company now does not allow the use of private phones at the work place.

    You can only use them during lunch and coffee breaks and in the cafeteria.
