    I never understood the use of a separate view/edit mode either anyway.

    The benefit of a separate view/edit mode is reduced energy expenditure by your finger/arm muscles.

    Windows 9x had a bug where at 38 days it would crash. However, almost nobody was able to keep it running that long, so the bug went long unnoticed. Similar to a former coworker who always arrived after 10 am, the program he wrote (which dealt with time) worked fine for him, but when people tried running it before 10:00 am it had issues (because he assumed the hour was always two digits, in the code). Good times.

    Parsing fail. It's not "random processes are running, oh noes!" It's "something got corrupted when the disk filled up because it couldn't write. We don't know which process got corrupted, so it is 'random'. We know all of the processes that are supposed to be running. A restart will ensure that nothing has experienced corruption which could further compromise our data." And, I completely agree with you.

    Unfortunately that's not true; the proof is not in the pudding, and never was. "The proof of the pudding is in the eating"; in other words, you can only tell whether it was done correctly if you consume it -- looking at it won't tell you either way.

    I also seem to remember something about some posts that were modded below -1, which meant that, although technically they were still there, you couldn't see them, and I also remember something about an entire thread that got "disappeared".

    I "participated" (somehow, those fucking losers running the site didn't read what I wrote, or something) in one of those "disappeared" threads. I lost mod points for several years; got them back a couple years ago. Why? I don't fucking know, I didn't say anything as negative about Slashdot back then as I'm saying in this comment.
