I never used the early releases of Gnome 3, but coming from the latest KDE I'm actually pretty happy with 3.4. Needed to get a good number of extensions to customize it like I like it but it's sleek, good looking and easy to use. Looking forward to 3.6, it already looks like it's going to obsolete some extensions and overall make my desktop even smoother.
Plus, it performs smoother than Compiz and Kwin, especially with resizing and 3D applications. Maybe 3.0 and 3.2 were crappy, but I'm not seeing where the hate is coming from now.
