One important correction: Watermarks are not audible. Once converted to analog the watermark in the digital audio stream is gone for ever. Even "lo-fi" (audible, or quality degrading) watermarks dissapear due to do phase shift, intermodulation distortion and other changes caused by D to A, and speaker-microphone dynamics.
My subjective take on this topic:
Maybe moronic consumers that buy fabricated pop music a la "Spears" or "Backstreet Boys" will go along with the machinations of en evil and corrupt industry.
But musicians and their fans have been known to be a little rebellious of "Dad" fascist CEO.
