According to the Wired article, it's a proxy server setup for this software. It does the work on their servers (comparing it to their large database of images) and passes the "OK" images on to you.
An interesting thing to look into is a research project called TOM at Carnegie Mellon University. It's goal is to convert all sorts of file formats from one to the other. I can't check it out to give more information because my firewall at work doesn't let unusual ports (it's served on 8001).
If that image is formatted the way normal Adobe programs are, that should be the name of the user and the name of the company. The serial number would be below and is not there (I think that is how all betas go, not sure about that one though).
