BTW, this guy is known to anyone that is up on mac news (there is a trollish article on his site slagging macs & mac users every month).

  2. Re:Junk Food for the Mind on Philosophy, Reality and The Matrix · · Score: 1

Some overweight people spend all their lives seeking the 'miracle diet', that will allow them to shed the pounds without unpleasant physical exercise. They do this because they believe that there must be a way of achieving their goal without putting themselves though hardship.

This is a modern fallacy, and one which you appear to be a victim of. Real philosophy *is* difficult to understand & arduous. If you don't believe me, go and read some.

You could start with Wittgenstein's 'Tractatus'. You may find it runs somewhat short of chicks in PVC, car chases and faux martial arts though.

    >You're missing the point.
I'm sure you sincerely believe that, in the same sense that a 13 year old NSync fan believes that Justin Timberlake is the greatest singer that ever lived.

Ughh... please don't say the Matrix was influential in terms of fight choreography. That's like saying Vanilla Ice was an influential force in Hip-Hop.

  5. Re:what the fuck sort of country puts prodigy... on Electronic Music 101? · · Score: 1

Well I'm not dismissing pop music entirely. Of course there is good pop music and bad pop music (such as S Club 7). The Prodigy (their recent efforts at least) are pop in the same sense as say, Moby.

Their success in America comes from being a more hummable version of Nine Inch Nails.

  6. Re:what the fuck sort of country puts prodigy... on Electronic Music 101? · · Score: 1

Bzzztt... wrong. I'm from London, actually my friend.

I'm well of aware of the Prodigy's history. However, they are still essentially a pop band if you're talking about there recent output (ie. Firestarter, Breathe etc...).

  7. Re:House Music/DnB Music on Electronic Music 101? · · Score: 1

oh, a quick p.s. to the direct parent, Disc one of Oakenfold's Global Underground - Oslo mix is pretty DnB if you count LTJ Bukem as DnB, which I do ymmv, although granted in general you think Oakenfold, you think Trance, and Endtroducing DJ Shadow was pretty DnB by the standard of its time.

Haven't heard the Oakenfold mix you refer to, although yeah obviously Bukem is DnB. Entroducing, whilst a fantastic album is certainly not DnB, not even slightly. It is Hip-Hop. Even Bukem to me doesn't really reflect the current DnB scene very well. For that, I suggest listening to some Renegade Hardware releases (particularly the Armageddon series), paying particular attention to the Usual Suspects & Konflict. Now that's DnB.

  9. Re:three words on Electronic Music 101? · · Score: 1

I'm not saying trance is shit. I'm just saying that it's clearly distinct from ambient.

Modern trance is almost the opposite of ambient, and it generally very busy, active music.

  10. Re:Off the top of my head... on Electronic Music 101? · · Score: 1

I second the RAM Trilogy recommendation. Try to get hold of Molten Beats, a fantastic albulm.

Dunno about Ed Rush & Optical though, I suppose they have they're moments.

Renagade Hardware are the label to watch for. Anything by Usual Suspects or Konflict.

Umm trance music (as in what you get if you buy a trance mix) has nothing to do with Brian Eno or Philip Glass. That's ambient.

  14. Re:Classics.. on Electronic Music 101? · · Score: 1

With respect, you're just listing artists that have made an impression in the American charts.

They are the Celine Dions of dance music (alright maybe not that bad), and you'll have to look a bit further than that unless you're the sort of person who likes radio.

  16. Re:House Music/DnB Music on Electronic Music 101? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Eh? Are you suggesting that DJ Shadow & PAul Oakenfold are D&B?

    I sincerely hope not.

To be honest, the variety of dance music (avoid calling it electronic music or electronica if you can) is so huge that you're not really giving us much to go on.

Most of the people on here are recommending the more trendy/alternative style of artist (ie. the ones you don't tend to here in clubs) such as Aphex Twin, Autechre, Plaid etc. which are fine but probably not what you're looking for after mentioning Sasha & John Digweed.

Half of the problem here is that the level of acceptance and understanding of Dance music in the US is pathetic.

To be honest, I'd get away from the idea of buying a single artist/album since this has a lot less relevance in Dance music. There are tons of Dance producers that make one fantastic record and everything else they do sucks. So mixes are the best way to go.

For you, I would recommend any of the Clubbers Guide albums from the Ministry of Sound. Don't know how difficult it is to get hold of them in the US though.

A fair point, but I think what he's trying to say is that the quality of the 2D engine is very high. Everything looks good on screen. Resizing is flicker free in a way that Windows never can be whatever the hardware.

All that's lacking is raw speed. This is primarily because current graphics card can't do the compositing and alpha channel stuff that Quartz has. This is not to say that these things won't improve.

If things still suck in a years time then people should worry. If you can't wait that long then switch to Windows...

Perhaps if America made some decent console games americans would buy them.

    Metal Gear Solid 1 & 2
    Gran Turismo 1,2 & 3
    ISS Pro Evolution 1 & 2
    Silent Hill 1 & 2
    Final Fantasy

All the major franchises are Japanese. Face it - the Japanese are better at writing games than Americans. Just be thankful that they don't give a toss about PC gaming because they'd probably be better at that as well if they tried (Mr Carmack & Valve excepted).

Some might say, if the artist was making music for the purpose of become a millionaire, they're in the wrong industry.

Seriously though, if you were an artist, and you had 2 choices

    1) Have many people listen to your music and some (enough to keep you very comfortable financially) pay for it.

    2) Have some people listen to your music (slightly more than who would be paying for it in option 1), and all pay for it.

Option 2 yields more money, option 1 more 'artistic validation'. I guess it depends on what your priorities are.

Besides which all of this is bullshit, because the vast majority of musicians make their money through touring not through album sales.

Hahah it's funny when a story like this comes up on Slashdot. Suddenly the discussion is overridden with AC trolls like this one, reasoning that 'only a moron' wouldn't want the functionality offered by MS.
This is either because they are from MS, or a Windows zealot from some other board (Arstechnica maybe).

To answer your point, troll, NOBODY uses the ability to type a url in the file browser window for accessing IE. I have never seen it used. The reason being that people have a customised set of toolbars/positions in IE that will not be used if you access the URL through a file explorer window. It is far easier to just click on the IE quicklaunch button (as you could do with any browser).
