  1. Re:BT are so messed up, that it's better to get IS on UK ADSL packages Announced By British Telecom · · Score: 1

Actually, it was the other way around. BT originally set for launch last september, but were told to delay by OFTEL till after the Y2K point. The lack of trialists was nothing to do with subscribers, they had loads of those. IT was a lack of participating ISP's. The ISP's were too busy in doing telco deals for cheap dial up to worry about ADSL, which they see as elitist. You ought to try interviewing a few of their MD's to see the total lack of imagination out there. When the original Bell South sytem was launched (using BT technology and results from a limited area trial in East Anglia 6 years ago)The ISP's formed a riotous Cue determined to get the sytem at "any cost" because they could see big profits in broadband content provision. Over here, the ISP's just winged on about having to pay anything at all. Broadband content is the key here. The more broadband (rather than pure surfing) grows, the less will BT be able to justify the large startup costs. Cable competition will be a major key here, but as yet their content provision is hopeless! Take Chello, for example. Their idea of content provision or broadband is buying the 1999 series of worlds strongest man. Keen, huh? Hang on in their guys, it will get better (and faster)

I am not totally sure that it is hackers you should be worried about. In an article in todays Sunday Times, it was reported that ISP's will be required to install a hard wire connection to a new £27m e-mail monitoring service being set up by the government to monitor e-mails. This will be covered by the same regulations that "almost" cover telephone tapping and is to be used for vice crime and terrorism detection...erm, etc!
