Funny, on my machine CDE runs way faster then Gnome + Enlightenment, MITSHM (which crashes Sun's X server reliably, was fixed in Solaris 2.6 but not 7) or not. My disk is always thrashing whenever I try to do anything.
But then again, my machine has the wrong hardware to run Solaris in the first place... as in IDE and "only" 64 MB RAM:-
Well, not exactly... we just need to make the pixels smaller than the resolution of the eye, and do so cheaply. Whatever happened to those 300-dpi displays I've heard about? (though we may need 600 dpi...)
I don't think raster displays will work for that. Mine can't even handle 100 dpi and still be sharp. (though I guess I can say my monitor does its own antialiasing;-) )
Analog has been tried before -- they're called vector displays (ala Spacewar and early Atari arcade games). For some odd reason they didn't catch on permanently. Go figure.
Finally, if you want to know how to create a 3-D image, I've found a link to ways of doing it.
I can identify one of them. I'm pretty sure the one at the bottom is one of the GNUSTEP file managers. Other than that... I need to set my screen to 320x200;-)
1. Claims 1 and 2 talk about something called an X-windows manager. What is this? To my knowledge there is no such thing as X-Windows, only The X-Window System(TM) which is often wrongly caled X-Windows.
2. Claim 3 talks about a Graphical User Interface called X. Now, I don't know about any GUI named X. I do know about a windowing system named The X Window System(TM) which in its different implementations is called variously X11R6, X11, XFree86, or OpenWindows, but this is merely a _windowing_system_, not a full GUI in and of itself.
3. Finally, in claims 8, the destination operating system is a "graphical operating system." That leaves out Unix and VMS as possible targets becuase they are basically character operating systems. PalmOS, on the other hand, is probably covered provided The X Window System(TM) gets ported to it.
Now, I might be wrong and there might indeed be a software product called X-Windows that features a GUI named X and runs on MacOS, Oberon, BeOS and many other less-popular graphical operating systems. Either way, this patent should be invalid for X11.
The X Window System(TM) is allegedly a trademark of The X Consortium. All Wrongs Reversed.
Excuse me, but I was under the impression that the President could just expand the number of justices on the Supreme Court to change the opinion (which HAS been done in the past). Or am I forgetting some law that fixes the number of justices at nine these days?
OK, so exactly how much difference _is_ there between the 95 and 98 GUIs besides using IE as the file manager? Oh, and I guess being able to put a URL barin the taskbar.
Other than that, it looks just about the same, correct?
Well, obviously someone left their complaint generator settings to "Political Action Committee" instead of changing it to "Dangerous video game that will turn our children into killers".

When's RedHat, or ANYBODY involved with Linux, going to do the demonstration part????
That's the way buying computers used to work. You tried the Apple IIe, the Atari 800, and the Commodore 64 in your local department store, then picked the one you liked best.
Currently, consumers think they have no choice, Linux or no Linux, because they can't play with Linux in the store. If they could, then they could make an informed decision. Right now they have to go by the reviews on the Internet, which just isn't the same IMHO as actually getting down and trying the OS.
Now that all Intel instruction set based computers need not be the same, I think it's important to find a way to get Linux machines set up on display in major computer stores to help boost its growth even more.
Maybe I've got the wrong idea of pure communism, but isn't it the economic system where everyone owns everything equally?
I think that type of communism would be the ideal. Unfortunately, it requires that all the members of the society be greedless and selfless, and that doesn't mesh with the realty of human nature.
One final question: Is the economic structure in the 24th century as described in Star Trek: First Contact this sort of communism?
Oh, come on. We all know that when parenthesizing an entire sentence, proper procedure is to put the punctuaion inside the parentheses. When parenthesizing a few words at the end of a sentence, the punctuation goes outside (but you could have guessed that).
(This is really off-topic but apparently important.)
The description says that it saves the dump to a SCSI partition. What happens if you're running IDE?
I think the idea is pretty cool -- no more trying to figure out why ksymoops didn't grok what you hastily scribbled down. I suppose all the hardcore kernel hackers will cry "Sacrilege!" though.
P.S. Sun won't sue for stealing their crash dump idea, right?;-)
There's only one thing wrong with that...
After pouring hot penguin fat there earlier, you don't have one.
Go bother OSOpinion or something.
My vote goes to XPilot. Freeciv is cool too, but since I suck at world domination, I prefer XPilot.
WHAT rec.math FAQ? I can't find it. rec.math doesn't even seem to exist anymore.
I'm really curious about why 0^0 = 1 because it's undefined.
lim(0^x, x, 0) == 0
lim(x^0, x, 0) == 1
use INTERCAL. Perhaps the only programming language ever to actually use COME FROM.

Because the current implementation is "for development only", and that feature will be in their DRI release.

Well,
a. They're still in business, so business must be doing OK.
b. They've moved into customization (if indeed their original business was ONLY support), so there must be a market there too.
Also, slight error: The company was founded February 1998.
Well, obviously someone left their complaint generator settings to "Political Action Committee" instead of changing it to "Dangerous video game that will turn our children into killers".
I see someone finally found the CORRECT use for the automated complaint generator.

Sorry, but you can't _prove_ scientific theories, only mathematical theorems.
You can gain evidence that the theory is right and increase your confidence in it though.
It only takes ONE REPEATABLE experiment, though, to refute a scientific theory, so that's reason enough to keep testing a theory's predictions.

I have FREE SPEACH as well as FREE SPEECH?
Where do I get some?!

Sorry to disappoint you, but not only are you not first, but the previous _six_ posts (a new record for Slashdot!) are not lame "First Post" posts.
