  1. This is good issue for public consumption on Richard Stallman Calls for Amazon Boycott · · Score: 1

Most of the patents that we bitch about on /. are
too esoteric for nonprogrammers to understand, and hence no one outside of the geek community really gives a damn. This one however, is simple and obvious enough for even a novice net-user to understand the ridiculousness of.

I've been asking my family not to use Amazon.com for any of their holiday shopping this year- especially if they're shoppping for me. If every geek familiar with this patent suit asked their friends and family not to use Amazon, we might actually make a difference.

  2. This part bothers me... on Details About New Crypto Export Regulations · · Score: 3

"Last night, the government group released a preliminary draft to several companies that manufacture encryption products. The government asked the firms to keep the details secret for the time being" I don't see any reason for the government to restrict the public from reading the report except to minimize nettlesome grass roots opposition to the new regulations. In a democracy the whole/B public (not just a selct few corporations) is supposed to able to review, discuss, and agitate for or against rules that will affect everyone. Though by and large it seems as if most companies have tried to stand up to the NSA and the Clinton administration when faced with absurd crypto regulations, I worry that they may find a path that optimizes their profits but minimizes our privacy.

  5. All great ideas are "obvious" -- in hindsight. on Company Demands 1% Share of Online Music Profit · · Score: 1

Mr. Ponzi, could you put rhetoric aside and use your own mind? In your replies you pay no heed to what those who disagree with you claim and instead toss out red herrings and slogans. It seems to me that you have neither paid attention to the specifics of this case nor thought carefully about the philosophy of intellectual property.

I suggest you put aside Ms. Rand for a spell and read more widely. Some books on logic (both informal and formal) and reasoning would be excellent so that you might become more rational. Many of Bertrand Russell's writings are excellent also. You might also wish to read up on computers so you can understand why this patent should be declared invalid.

  6. No. You have it backwards. on Company Demands 1% Share of Online Music Profit · · Score: 1

No. You have it backwards. Allowing trivial patents like this one does amount to state-sponsored theft, however the thief in this case is the patent holder who is given a government enforced monoply on trivial and obvious information. Inhibiting information also inhibits a free market by creating an artificial barrier to entry for competitors thus preventing price competition and fixing costs at a value that would be disequilibrative in a free market.

  7. A Public Service Reminder: whole shebang vs. patch on Linux 2.2.0pre9 = 2.2.0 Final (Almost) · · Score: 1

Please don't download the complete source everytime a new kernel is released. Doing so is a huge waste of bandwidth and needlessly ties up the servers, preventing other people from accessing it. Get the complete source once and download only the new patch each time thereafter.

  8. LinuxPPC does not run on the 7100 on LinuxPPC at MacWorld · · Score: 1

Sorry, but LinuxPPC does not run on any Nubus machines. If you want to run Linux on you will need to use MkLinux. MkLinux is a modified Linux kernel running through the Mach 3.0 microkernel. it will be 20-30% slower than native PPC Linux, but from a users perspective is functionally the same as the equivalent native Linux kernel (2.0.x) and it is binary compatible with LinuxPPC.
