  1. Street Performer Protocol on At Last And At Length: Lars Speaks · · Score: 1

I think the Street Performer Protocol is intersting enough to merit its own discussion thread (separate from the whole Metallica/Napster issue). Would someone a little more "in the know" about this thing put together a summary and submit it to /. please?

  2. analog is OK, but digital not? WRONG! on At Last And At Length: Lars Speaks · · Score: 1
Lars (and the record industry in general) seems to be of the opinion that it's OK for people to make an analog copies of a song and give it to a few friends, but it's illegal to make a digital copy and post it on the Internet.

So the question becomes, where exactly is the line between OK and illegal? If I make my digital copies that don't sound good (8kHz mono), is that OK? What about really high quality analog copies? Or is the point more that each successive copy must be of lesser quality than the previous one? If that's the case, how many errors do I need to introduce in the copy for it to be acceptable?

When you stop and think about questions like this, hopefully you see how ridiculous this argument can get.

The bottom line is, it's either OK for me to copy your music or it's not. The medium shouldn't matter and the quality shouldn't matter.

What, are you worried that people are going to abort their kids if they find out they don't have blond hair and blue eyes?

    In a word, yes.

Look at what's happening today in China. People there are so ape to have a son that they are hiding their pregnancies and abandoning the baby if it turns out to be female. While this has been a boon for American parents that want to adopt a newborn baby, it has some obvious long term negative effects on China and society as a whole. Think about what's going to happen in about 20 years when today's babies are looking to get married...

  4. what happens when the "Smudges" get smeared? on Hyperlinks In The Meat World · · Score: 2

The article talkes about tiny "smudegs" of mineature UPC that are no larger than a U.S. penny. I'm wondering what's going to happen when the printing press smears that. I don't know about your local newspaper, but mine often has pages that are diffcult to read because if ink smears/runs/blots/etc. I would think that you'd need a very percise printing process to make this work reliably.
