Not really. Open Office resembles MS Office 2000 more than MS Office 2007(2010??). Therefore, people are willing to go to OO rather than have change.
And Linux can be configured to look and function just like XP, and Ubuntu, except for the "start bar" being at the top, functions almost like XP for most things.
Further, if people are being made (forced) to "learn" something new, they are more willing to look at alternatives, like OO and Linux or even Apple.
The point being, if people are having to "change" they are willing to REALLY change. My In-laws are a great example. They are an older couple, in the sixties and seventies, and they don't like VISTA. My Father in law asked me the other day to show him Linux, and he said, that it looks a lot like Windows.
He was able to open Firefox, OO, Email, everything he does, quickly without any fuss. Ubuntu is getting very close to getting mom n pop .
Microsoft has long been promoting "good enough" approach to things. It isn't the most secure... it is good enough. It isn't the most robust... it is good enough. It isn't the most productive... it is good enough.
This is the Achilles heal of Microsoft. With Windows XP and Office since 2000 or even 2003, has been "good enough". I can't think of ANYTHING Microsoft can offer in Win 7 or Office 2010 that I would actually use. And changing how things work, just for the sake of changing how they work, is counter productive.
In early 2003 I made the statement that 2008 was going to be the first sign of Microsoft's demise as tech leader. The Storm has hit, and is now ravaging Microsoft. Google is building Chrome OS (which I would assume is tied to Android... somewhere), Open Office is very usable, Wine is getting to the point of being solid, Linux is appearing on desktops, Webservices, mobile devices (iPhone, Blackberry, Android) etc.
You can see the panic at Microsoft in their web services division, from the search engines changes to Live and now to Bing. You can see the panic in the OS and Office with the huge changes in the UI to cover up that really nothing has changed since 2000.
Microsoft is suffering from the "good enough" syndrome. Everything they have made for the last 6 or 8 years is "good enough" and when Vista comes along and changes things just to change things, people buck against it. You'll see more of the same with Office.
I honestly think one of the reasons Gates left, was because he saw the writing on the wall, and got out while the getting was good.
No need to remember more than one Password, just have to remember one. Yes, I'm against forcing password changes, because exactly of this type of scheme. It does NOTHING to secure anything. Because people like yourself end up putting the password under the keyboard or worse, up on the wall of the cubicle.
The other thing I tell people, is to remember a phrase and acronym it, and use that for their password, along with the scheme I have above and it solves all sorts of problems in complexity and dictionary style attacks.

So, how does one upload to a website? CPanel? Secure Shell? Do Tell! You know, not everyone manages their own server....
You are assuming that errors occur at a particular rate per base pair. If that assumption is off, then your whole premise is off.
Again, it may be better, or it may be worse. We don't have ENOUGH INFORMATION to do anything but guess based upon assumptions. I'm not willing to assume much.
On the other hand, a shorter DNA strand has less room for errors that might be non-life threatening.
Meaning duplication errors are magnified.
It is interesting to see how people view news like this, as people tend to fit the results into their own world views.
The way I view this is not "XOR" logic, as it could be BOTH. Yes, there is less chance of problems, but greater chance those problems are life threatening.
And, just like I view things, there is blessing and curses in everything. Read the following link if you want a better look into my world view.
Proposition 13 isn't the problem, it really isn't. The problem is the state legislature which continues to add socialist benefits to socialist benefits.
The Political Beast eats its own, creates an unsustainable welfare state, paid for by exorbitant taxes. We currently have Sales taxes fast approaching 10%, chasing the merchants from the state. Brick and Mortar shops cannot compete with Amazon's sales tax free setup, even if the prices are the same, and you include shipping!
We wouldn't be in this problem if the legislature (Democratic LOCKED)got off its fat ass and started to CUT spending on programs that do nothing but ensure voters vote for (D) candidates.
Oh, but that is "taking away from the poor", and we can't do that! Well, with that attitude, eventually everyone left in the state will be "poor" with nobody left able to pay the taxes needed to support them.
Hell, I'd move if I could afford it, and I might not be able to afford NOT to shortly.
How is it, that the solution that most people think of first is "More Taxes" rather than "cut spending" ??? When is it ENOUGH????
And lets not "fix" healthcare until they can fix the economy (HAHHAHA).
YOU are saying that the material good itself isn't worth dying over, but it is worth killing over.
You are willing to accept a guy killing for an iPhone in your world. I'm not. It is, really, that simple.
I'm the kind of guy who is willing to kill someone to get my stolen items back, if the person is willing to kill me to steal them. I don't want to kill, but I'm willing. The problem is, our society has been so pussified that people like you say that people like me are dangerous, and not the idiot who stole (and is willing to kill) for my iPhone.
That is the problem right there. YOU are saying that the material good itself isn't worth dying over, but it is worth killing over.
Let me ask you this, would you want a guy willing to kill over a stolen iPhone wandering the streets of your town? Because that is the only alternative you have.
I would be willing to confront someone over anything they stole from me. The dollar value is insignificant, whether it is $1 or Million. The fact that you can't see this scares me.
Honestly I don't care if you cry for me or not. In fact, I don't expect you to cry for me. However, I am crying because you'd rather let a thief get away with it, than confront him because of your cowardice. I cry not for you, but for the thief who got away with it.
So much for leaving the world a better place than when you found it.
Where were the independent securities rating agencies during the recent banking fiasco?
I'll tell you where they were... they were giving false impression of regulation, where non existed.
I would rather have an UNREGULATED industry than pretend a regulated one is better. At least I would know what I was getting myself into. Alas, people are lazy and want others to do for them what they could easily do for themselves.
Ever heard of Jury nullification. IF a law is unjust, the jury has the right to judge the law itself.
The Justice system doesn't like to promote this, but it is there. The Jury is the last stand against a tyrannical government. Which is why we have a jury of peers, and not professionals.
Juries can change laws. The problem is getting a jury to know this fact without being able to tell them. It is generally not allowable to tell the jury that they have a right to decide if the law is just or not.
"I can definitively say that what this guy did was extremely dangerous and stupid."
Really? If that were the case, then we've already lost. Our country is filled with cowardice, like yours. As the powers continue to take away your freedoms, one at a time, in the name of peace and security, you sit back and cower in fear of losing more if you "act up" and stand up for yourself.
I'm reminded of the quote....
All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." (Edmund Burke)
So, do nothing, be nothing, as cowards usually are. Hide behind your computer screen in anonymity whining about how bad the world is knowing that by being a coward, you have contributed to exactly what you fear most.
"I'd prefer to just lose my phone and shell out another $500 than receive a violent beat down at the hands of some street thug."
And that is what is wrong with our society today. People are scared of violent street thugs and would rather not bother them, and leave them to be... violent thugs wondering the streets searching for their next victim.
I guess it is too hard to get yourself trained and armed and stop thinking the police will protect you, because they won't, unless it is convenient to them to do so.
I would confront the asshole, and if he wanted to kill me for my iphone, then that person should be OFF the streets anyway. Life is too short is be a coward waiting to be the next victim.
Seriously, what is wrong with the world today, have we so much to lose that we allow thugs to knowingly roam free for fear of losing more???
We've already lost if that is the case. It is only a matter of time before we realize it.
As a side note, the cum stained dress was clearly a taxable benefit to Monica as well. Hmmmm
If we taxed sex, all of our country's financial problems would disappear over night. The film industry in San Fernando Valley was unavailable for comment.
The IRS is NOT prosecuting him for paying in Gold. The IRS doesn't care how you pay someone. Gold, Silver, mud, iron, hell in Nevada even Sex.
Couple of problems here. How much is sex valued? Do we charge every act of sex with the same value? Would having sex with Cowboy Neal be worth more or less than sex with Milla Jovovich?
Did Bill Clinton have to pay for that blowjob he got from Monica as taxable income, and what is the fair market value of that blowjob?
IRS tax laws are stupid, arbitrary and capricious, and as such, should be deemed illegal.
I'm wondering why some industrious lawyer hasn't taken this kind of logic into court? I think I could have the jury in stitches, laughing so hard at how ridiculous the IRS is in all of the rules it has.
What's wrong with what Microsoft is doing with Windows XP?
Getting rid of it.
Here's my take. MS has for the last 20 years or so, taught people that good enough is good enough. With XP, they have attained perfection in "Good Enough(tm)".
Vista, and Windows 7 don't give me ANYTHING I need. I need an OS that works with my stuff (I have a scanner without Vista Drivers), doesn't try to outguess what I want, make me change the way I do things for no reason other than to be "not XP".
Microsoft has screwed the pooch on this one: "Good Enough(tm)".
Your COLO probably bought RACKS of identical servers, and for every rack has one hot standby. THAT is what I would do if I were running a COLO.
When running a large operation it is easy to bury an extra standby server in with 24 or 48 other servers (add 1/24 or 1/48 to the cost of each server). However when you order the server as a one off, you can't double the cost just to have a hot spare.
Here is an example.
Let us assume you're building a server, and it cost $5000. Are you gonna cry over the $210 needed for the spare ? Will you cry over $5000 for the spare?
The difference is that when you have MANY it is much easier to cover the spare.
[IT] We requested $X for the job, you gave us $X/100 for the job, we couldn't. We warned you what the risks were in these 12 Emails, 2 Printed Letters and numerous phone calls. You didn't care because it cost too much at $X but was worth it for $X/100. Now you have to pay $X x 100 to fix your short sightedness.
Don't blame us if you didn't understand the risks.
Office is good software. I just can't figure out why Microsoft thinks it is worth $325 or so (pricewatch-retail), can you?
Not really. Open Office resembles MS Office 2000 more than MS Office 2007(2010??). Therefore, people are willing to go to OO rather than have change.

you see, that is where you are wrong.
I'd rather be an armed sheep than an unarmed one. One of the wolves is going with me, maybe both. The wolves know this.
A well armed society is a polite society. There is a reason why Chivalry is measured by knights and manners.
What is worth risking your life?

I'll knock Democracy all day long. IT is the fastest way to dictatorship.
Democracy is two wolves and sheep deciding what is for dinner. No thanks.
As soon as the populace realizes it can vote itself money from the public treasury, the democracy crushes the ribs that hold it together.
A Republic is Two wolves, and an armed sheep deciding what is for dinner. No Tyranny of the majority allowed.

Everyone should pay something in taxes, only then will they care how it is used. People who don't pay ANY taxes don't care how it is used.
You want to fix government? Fix the tax code so people care about what the government does. And you won't have anyone running around saying "Obama's going to pay for my gas and mortgage"
There is no such thing as someting for nothing. And the rich cannot pay for everyone else.
