The phrase "Something has to be done. We're doing something. Therefore it has to be done!" is very appropriate.
The fact is, this problem was caused by both (D) and (R) people pushing for regulations and controls on the marketplace. None of the CONTROLS and OVERSIGHT mattered when people were making lots and lots of $$$$. But now that the pyramid scheme has collapsed (as it will always do), people want MORE of the SAME.
I have one rule, that will fix all the stupid short sighted problems of the "free" market, and won't need any government regulation or oversight.
Pay all boards and CEO types a salary of $1. Give them stock, of which they can only SELL 1% the year that they get it, the other 99% of the stock is locked away for 20 years, and is untouchable.
There isn't anyone worth $35 million (or whatever it was) for 19 days of work. I'm not even sure there is anyone really worth $35 million a year, but that is my opinion.
1) workers decide who they work for. If they don't like the work, they are FREE to leave. They are NOT slaves.
2) An Employer can treat his/her employees anyway they see fit. The employees are free to leave anytime.
I do see a problem with overworking employees and not compensating them. I won't work for anyone that does these things, because if they cheat these people, then what else are they willing to cheat at? If you have no problem signing up with such a company, then you get exactly what you deserve, and should expect.
I wonder how many "shady" things went on at the various Wall Street firms that people "overlooked" because they wanted to keep their job. It is easy to go along with "shady deals" when you're making $. I have no sympathy for anyone involved in this latest boondoggle. There were clues as early as 1995 that things weren't kosher at the FMs.
It always starts with something innocuous and seemingly benign, like Overtime Pay. The question is, why are YOU willing to work for a company / boss who doesn't value you properly, and compensate you accordingly? Why are you complaining about it? In my opinion, if you're in that position, YOU are part of the problem. Don't ask me to fix your problem you make for yourself.
And this goes for the $425,000 per US citizen bailout bill we're about to get. Think about what you could do with an extra $425,000. Now imagine us handing that over to those who have already raped this country.
You can refuse to work beyond scope. If you bend the the corporate slave drivers, you've got nobody else to blame but yourself. If you don't like what is expected of you, then leave. If you're good, you should be able to find another job. If not, well. then they can depend upon you to work evenings and weekends.
"There is nothing inherent to open source that guarantees that it will cost less to buy than proprietary code"
This is 100% false. Even if the proprietary code supplier gives code away, the support costs are set by the proprietary source vendor, not by open market. With Open Source, one can change support vendors or even grow your own support at any time. Vendor lockin is a cost, even if the actual cost is less up front, it rarely is long term.
And that is just for Source Code support. Now, lets talk about data lockin and now we're really adding to the long term costs.
I currently manage a system that has YEARS of data locked in a proprietary format, and the software just plain sucks. But there is no easy (ie "cheap") way to move to another vendor at this point. So, we are stuck, until it becomes too painful to live with.
I like Open Source ideals (free, as in speech) I like Open Source results (free as in beer)
I also live in the US, so please categorize me correctly in the "save money" column, until I move to Europe, when you should categorize me in the other column.
This isn't an XOR problem, so who cares which is "more important", especially when the result for using Open Source is the same either way?
Gmail will also do this for you. Most domain hosting companies can do email as well, while most don't do Imap, a few offer MSExchange (Yuck) if you're into Outlook (not so good).
And nobody ask you to fix it. Nobody is clamering to buy two new devices just because you want me to. I don't have HD TV, so I don't need BLUERAY. I don't have BLUERAY, so I don't need HDTV (okay, so I want it, I almost lied).
This is a chicken egg problem.
And you know what, a regular DVD looks WAY better on HDTVs than standard TVs. And the wide screen is just fantastic, from what I've seen.
Now, I predict that in three years or so, a new format will come out that will be even better, and replace BRD. AND that tech will win. It will probably be a reworked version of HD-DVD with a "New Catchy Name"(tm). Super Blue Disk (SBD for short).
8. to insert, or direct to come in, in a specific place in a musical or dramatic performance (usually fol. by in or into): to cue in a lighting effect.
Gotta love Grammar nazis though. Though "Queue" also works.

They will even pick it up, if you're in California.
... we can't hear you ! la la la la la la .... something about blood of tyrants and patriots comes to mind.
WHY do we need incentives to do the "right" thing?
Why are we beholden to evil, unless someone pays us to not be?
{sarcasm} I guess I'm just too stupid or naive to understand {/sarcasm}
That would explain the US electoral process.
The result will force a reboot of the US government.
One can only hope!
There are two parts to your question.
1) workers decide who they work for. If they don't like the work, they are FREE to leave. They are NOT slaves.
2) An Employer can treat his/her employees anyway they see fit. The employees are free to leave anytime.

Then get two :-D
That is what Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool does .... maliciously removes software.
Who knew? Batman is He Man. I would never have guessed.

I've never been so ashamed in my life, as I am right now, for knowing that Grayskull is the home of He Man.
I'm looking at you funny. WHACHAGONNADOABOUTIT?
PC LOAD A10
They have Warthogs???? COOL!
Free (as in speech) = Libre
Free (as in beer) = Gratis
Generally speaking of course. These are "generic" terms used so that people who are joe sixpack can understand the relative terms.
It is a thematic approach, and not entirely accurate. For example, I've never seen "free beer".
"There is nothing inherent to open source that guarantees that it will cost less to buy than proprietary code"

I like Open Source ideals (free, as in speech)
I like Open Source results (free as in beer)

Don't Be Evil
Do No Evil.
So, what you're saying is that Google can actually "do evil" while remaining "not evil". Please explain this conundrum.
In short, OMGWHATEVER
I wasn't talking about iPhone, I was talking about Android phone.
Oh wait, probably the same rules as iPhone, but Google is "do no evil", Apple is evil.
Sorry, my bad.
what if I pay for "unlimited" plan, in cash? Credit check for credit use ... oh noes.
Or, how about paying CASH for the phone, and buying the service separately. Don't tell me this is impossible, hackers will make it possible.
The problem is that most people aren't creative enough to solve simple problems, or want their cake and eat it too.
Buy a iPhone and don't worry about Google.
Dearest Low UID guy,
It seems clear, I'm newer than you, so I'm probably not low enough UID to be on that invite list.
I'm sorry to have bothered you.
Sincerely,
n00b Archangel
That's what the Airport bar is for. Three Jack Daniels doubles on the rocks for me please.
Let see if "suspicious" includes ... Drunks. If that is the case, I'm screwed!
Gmail will also do this for you. Most domain hosting companies can do email as well, while most don't do Imap, a few offer MSExchange (Yuck) if you're into Outlook (not so good).
Seriously, why is this on Slashdot?
I don't care about DRM, because DRM will take care of itself. It will break, and nobody would ever by another BLU title, or Drive again.
I can't help Stupid People (tm) from being stupid. In this case Stupid People are the Blu-Ray Association AND those the buy it.
However, if I talk about DRM being "broken" in every case, the people around me have no excuse if and when they buy a BRP or disc and it doesn't work.
And nobody ask you to fix it. Nobody is clamering to buy two new devices just because you want me to. I don't have HD TV, so I don't need BLUERAY. I don't have BLUERAY, so I don't need HDTV (okay, so I want it, I almost lied).

Cue
2. anything that excites to action; stimulus.
8. to insert, or direct to come in, in a specific place in a musical or dramatic performance (usually fol. by in or into): to cue in a lighting effect.
Gotta love Grammar nazis though. Though "Queue" also works.
