  1. Re:Weird... on Using Safari Slows Your System? · · Score: 1

Had the same experience as you. I just went back to Safari as my primary browser last week because I noticed I was staring at the beachball much more with Firefox open. Plus FF crashes a bit more than I'd like.

Safari does eat gobs of memory though.

The dirty little secret other Mac users don't tell you is Macs are prone to lots of wierd little freezes and many of the built-in apps like Mail, iPhoto, etc. do crash a bit. I still love my Mac because the overall user experience is still way better than any other commercial desktop OS.

  2. Not The Real Issue on Report Blasts "Peak Oil" Theory · · Score: 1

The real issue is if we should continue using oil instead of cleaner forms energy. As an American, I think we are long overdue at making a serious effort to move to alternative, cleaner fuels regardless of how much oil is left in the ground. And of equal importance is the question of whether we want to keep buying oil from people in the Middle East that fund the terrorists that fly planes into our buildings.

Those are two of the *many* reasons I quit my job and work from home now (most of the other reasons are quality of life related). I only fill up my car about once or twice a month now.

I mostly agree with you. All of the new features are just bells and whistles except for Time Machine. Having backup and restore features built into the OS make it worth the price of the upgrade.

  4. Milk crates... on Considerations for Raised Floor Installation? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I used to keep my PCs on top of milk crates and the surge protector, hub, etc. on top of the PCs. I did my best to contain the whole mess of wires with zip ties or velcro straps.

With the space under the crates and some space on the sides and behind, I got pretty good air flow. One of my machines was overclocked so it needed it. The whole setup worked pretty well and wasn't too unsightly.

  5. Push for standards on Tips for Selecting a Web Development Firm? · · Score: 1

I have been contracting out web development work recently and I have not used the same firm or person twice. I am surprised with how few web developers know how to properly do CSS, well-formed HTML/XHTML.

Most of stuff they've designed is entirely table-based, 800x600 layouts that are cluttered and difficult to maintain.

What I am considering, is doing the page layouts myself and contracting out the photoshop-type stuff.

For shame. The people that help us steal music are now stealing themselves. It's terrible.
