Why is there no mention of Portable Network Graphics in this discussion? .png has an alpha channel, has broad support, and uses *lossless* compression. What's not to like? It does not compress as tightly as highly compressed .jpg, but as several have pointed out, that's not as big an issue any more.

So am I missing something? Or is it just some kind of marketing thing that .png does not see much use?

Generally I use png when I need transparency on logos and the like, for everything else I use jpg. If this bpg is good and gets in I can use a single format, which would make things, oh I dunno, 5% easier. Arguably I could just use only png but for some reason I don't, too much converting I guess. Adding another format doesn't really do anything but it's a slow morning so might as well chime in.

Perhaps the sole reason I use Windows is to use Adobe software. I do not have a choice in the matter, work/school requires that I run that software. Now I need an operating system to run that software. I cannot afford Mac, so Windows it is. But wait, Windows is not stable. I have to get antivirus, defrag, software/driver updaters and registry correction software on top of that. It costs a lot, but still cheaper than Mac.

I have to use CS on a mac for work and trust me, it is no more stable on than on windows. IMHO the windows version is better because it has more options for saving out of the box (Try using PremPro to make an .AVI. you have to go get extra codecs on your own and there's no k-lite or equivalent for mac. PS has similar issues). Plus if you're not used to a mac they are a proper pain in the ass to make do what you want when your used to windows.

It works in the cellphone industry because the hardware is heavily subsidised, to the point of "free" in many deals. For MS to subsidise PCs to that extent, the subscription on top of that would have to be pretty steep.

Fixed that for you... And that is why I do NOT have a smart phone.

Well that's obviously why don't know the phones aren't rented. You don't have to return them at the end of your contract. You're more than able to get a sim only deal and not pay for a new phone, or buy a phone upfront and not pay monthly, or just say screw that and keep it as a mini computer, sell it on or shove it up your ass if that's what you want to do. Phones are sold, not rented. I'm sure there are rental deals out there somewhere but that's not the way it works for Joe Public. If that's THE reason you don't have one you fucked it up. If you don't want one, don't get one, but don't blame it on bullshit reasons.

You can't destroy Sony without stopping people from giving them money. If your goal is to destroy Sony, your only option is to attack their cash flow. Making the system unavailable during high demand periods is a way to decrease customer confidence and the likelihood that they will give their disposable income to Sony.

Yes, they're assholes, but what they are doing does male sense, and suggesting otherwise is ignorant.

Yeah, it makes sense in a way, but running a ddos is the most basic, least imaginative thing you can do and annoys the customers much more than the company, and turns potential supporters of your cause against you. At this point sony have lost nothing other than a tiny consumer confidence (of which they had fuck all to begin with anyway). They will probably sell the exact same amount of playstations and the people who were unable to buy games off psn will just do it when it's back up. These lizard kids really need to look at what gop did to learn how to fuck a company properly. PSN would probably be a major casualty of a proper hack but when you just ddos it and it alone then that's just weak, only if they managed to keep it up for weeks or more would it have some kind of impact. I don't know the details but did they target any other part of sony infrastructure? My guess would be no, these kids probably barely realise sony do more than playstation and a couple cameras and for all intents and purposes might as well be a bunch of different companies with the same first name.

Obvisouly a while but its not out of the question. Sony pissed off North Korea several months ago when they announced The Interview. If it takes a week to download ~100TB at ~1Gbps then a couple weeks/months is all they need for all that data.

Agreed, but, isn't someone monitoring internet usage? 100 TB being downloaded even in a week to 10 days is an increase of multiple terabytes a day over whatever they normally use. One would think that would cause a spike on a graph somewhere, that someone ought to have investigated.

I've been hosting websites for years, and the only time I was ever compromised (one server turned into a spam mail server -- how embarrassing) I caught it almost immediately by a sudden spike in the network traffic.

As someone else said, since Sony has been compromised before, it just seems amazing that there wasn't some higher level of scrutiny.

The flaw in your logic is assuming competence at sony. Also as has been stated 100tb overall isn't all that much relatively. The raw footage from one movie will probably exceed that.
