  1. Computers are the most useless on Scrounging for Fun and Profit · · Score: 1

From the article: "Computers are the most useless--they are right up there with disposable diapers in landfill."

This is so true. Although people tend to get nostalgic about computers, especially in the Linux crowd - let's face it - a computer older than 4 years is certainly useless, drains electricity for no aparent reason; at nowadays prices you can cheaply replace it with something many times more powerful.... Just reminded me of a thing I saw on TV - some sort of university in the US was giving old, used computers to schools in Africa, so kids there are not so distanced from the Internet age. The old crap they showed was competely useless junk. When I imagined the shipping cost they paid for these things.....

These guys seem to be keen on regstering trade marks in the US. They even registered "secure shell". What the f...? I thought that it's impossible to register generic words as trade marks especially when they are used in the exact same context, e.g. imagine you are obliged to use the following in a manual: Application A is a secure shell ® application blah, blah...
And what the hell is "IPSEC ON SILICON"?

It's a pity - there are so many brilliant open source programmers from Finland....

From a happy Paris Apple Expo attendant:
For your information the Apple exhibition and the building where Steve Jobs made his keynote were in totally different parts of Paris.

    - Keynote - Palais des Congrès, PorteMaillot
    - Apple Expo - Parc des Expositions, Porte de Versailles

The distance between the two is about 20 min by bus or Metro.

After I attended the Steve Jobs keynote there were free buses provided by Apple that took us to the Apple Expo. Nice :-)

There were so many people for the keynote that the ones who were not there at least an hour before the speech were taken to different halls with giant screens showing the keynote in real-time. The hall where the keynote was held wasn't big enough :-(

The thing that astonished me the most at the Apple Expo was the huge line of ppeople waiting to buy the Mac OSX beta. Another thing was all the people who bought the Cube. The amont of people carrying a box with the new Cube was amazing. And somebody said it was too expensive... And finally, in comparison to previous Apple expos, there were many more foreigners (Germans, Britts, Italians, etc.). I guess the Paris Apple Expo is poised to become the European Apple event of the year.

LOW POWER ? Why not just create a RISC architectured chip like the G3 and not care about consumption. Of course it's techically challenging to create an Intel clone that has LOW POWER consumption but the question is why an Intel clone? And don't give me the Linux crap because you can run Linux on any platform you want (hint: a 500 Mhz G3 laptop with a comfy 6 hour battery life).
    The reason behind Transmeta is:
    Paul Allen
    => think Microsoft
=> problem with laptops (Intel & AMD incapable of delivering what the Windows users want - autonomy)
=> major investment in a chip that will run Windows and consumes less
=> make more money selling Windows as the ultimate mobile platform.

If they are surving on hype alone why are their eranings growing twice as fast as those from DELL ? Why do they have a record low inventory (lower than that of DELL - a company that is supposed to have virtually no inventory since it sells only direct) ? The only selling point of the Macs is their OLD user interface??!! One thing that short-sighted people never grasp in such situations is that technical specs might matter for someone who loves to show off in front of people but in the real world people buy computers to get their work done as quickly as possible and with the least possible hastle and brain damage. And of course with the best after-feeling/after-taste after sitting for hours behind a computer. In the case of the Mac that usually comes from the ellagance of the user interface and from the fact that Apple always uses high quality components to make a easily accessible machine (read: their machines do not become a piece of crap in 2 years). The design of the Macs surely is a selling factor but don't you really prefer the looks of a Mac compared to the plain ugliness of a Dell. Since I spend most of my time in front of a compuetr - I prefer to have someting that at least does not disturb the interior design of the room. (May be that's why PC users usually hide their computers underneath their desks).
By the way - your comparison is silly since it comes down to comparing peripherla devices - otherwise in terms of architecture thay are too different to be compared and if you want to this at least be more precise:

    From the website of Apple:

    $3,499.00

    500MHz PowerPC G4

    1MB L2 cache

    256MB SDRAM - 1 DIMM

    27GB Ultra ATA drive

    Zip drive

    DVD-RAM drive with DVD-Video

    RAGE 128 Pro card - 16MB SDRAM

    Three FireWire ports

For the same price you get the following from Dell's website:

Intel Pentium® III Processor 866 MHz

    256KB L2 Cache

    128MB RDRAM

    40GB Ultra ATA Hard Drive

    19" Monitor

64MB DDR NVIDIA geFORCE Graphics Card

    DVD-ROM

    Speakers

    Modem

Now some of differences you might notice:
The PC configuration seems to be more complete. The Power Mac does not ship with modem, speakers, monitor and its graphics card is may be inferior but it has:

    3 Firwire ports
1 MB of L2 cache compared to just 256 KB
    Zip drive
DVD RAM instead of just DVD-ROM

As for the "Every good graphics app you can get for the PC" - I really doubt that Photoshop? Illustrator, Quark, etc. perform better on the PC from DELL - you might be surprised how many times faster the G4 will be using the same graphics apps.

It is just plain stooopid from the part of Metallica to be involved in this isuue at all - especially when it is evident that they don't have the brains/education to do so. ButtHead out!
Do you think MTV pays when they "download" music from the record companies and than "uplaod" it to ther viewers who watch. No! because it is promotion on the part the record companies- go get it....
