This is all well and good until she starts to equate the computer they built together as a sign of their love. Upon its first crash, she interprets that as a their relationship crashing down around her and leaves him for some guy with a unix box.
The oldest and saddest story in the lands of computer love.
I've had nothing but issues with compiling 2.6.9 under fc1 and fc2, so I'm really looking forward to getting 2.6.9 prepackaged and working right, so I can finally get acpi functioning properly. I'll be loading tonight and if all works well, I can't think of a better selling point for fc3
While I was in HS and College, this would have made so much sense to me. Looking at all the work behind it just makes my head hurt now. I think I replaced my math knowledge with coding ability.
I'm a big fan of combining technologies and making life easier as much as possible, but in this case I don't think this product would work for me. I've always had palms in the past and have always kept them in my briefcase or outside compartment of my laptop case. I've gotten to accustomed to carrying a small phone now (the motorolo v8160) to carry something as large and bulky as the treo. Bottom line, I don't wish to carry something the size of a palm in my pocket.
Since the 64bit architecture so far is only on the server side, this should be interesting to see how amd is going to be embarassed byt the enterprise level server community. In due time 64 bit apps will make their way to the consumer market, but people don't really need them now. Doesn't mean I don't like to see a nice mud slinging battle between Intel and AMD though. I just want to see who Intel's exciting and new mascot will be for the new release which I'm sure will get a very original name like Pentium 5?!?! maybe.
I'm glad to see someone finally press a book that deals with what most likely takes up the largest portion of my life. GAMES Game design in the past few years has gone heavily towards story lines reminiscent of soap operas. Take the final fanatasy series for instance. If you are die hard RPG player like myself you will notice that the whole flow of the game has moved away from series level building and monitary gain towards character developement and plot lines. I do miss spending hours on end building my levels and gold supplies so high that I can breeze through the game. it gives you a good sense of accomplishment. I would have to say though, that I like the big story lines in the games now. It draws you into the game. In FFVII you could actually feel sad when cloud killed his main love interest under an outside control. I am really hoping that this book delves heavily into the building of the plots and storyline in newer games. On the other end of the spectrum, we have our good friends over at ID cranking out the blood, guts and sheer graphical power. It's nice to play a good RPG, but I need to pick up a BFG and clear out a room full of people online every now and again. Gibs Gibs Gibs I love it all!!! I'm thinking that I would look forward to a good tell all book from Carmack. Maybe someday my dream will become a reality. hahaha
I'm not leery about this. The thing that does bother me is that all I see in the world today are companies that are taking care of their employees. I work for Gateway computer, one of the largest computer companies in the world. You would think that we could get free computers, hell we make the things. You can't get a cheaper computer then that. But wait, we get a huge discount. Are you ready for this. 10%. A whopping 10 percent. This is relaly great considering that sales tax is 6%, which boils that great discount down to 4%. And that wonderful privilege comes after you have been with the company for a whole year. I'm glad to hear that Ford is taking care of their employees. Hell somebody has to.
Maybe I should start sell cars rather then computers. At least I would get a free computer out of the whole deal. Does anyone have an email address for Ford's personnel dept.
Am I alone in the thoughts that a company should sell product to their employees at cost. Wouldn't the idea of, we don't care to make money off of our employees, because they make money for us be nice!!!
This free Be could either onee of two ways from what I see. One, the availibility of free Be will spark a great amount of interest in the OS causing a much great amount of software and support in the BE community. Or two. The lack of indiivuals pruchasing Be will cause the company to lose great sums of money, forcing them to cut R&D from the OS. This would cause less and less advances in the later Releases of Be. This would essentially turn Be Inc into Micro$oft (Without the same sized checking account of course). I don't really see it to be that much of a deal to release the OS for free. When I started out in Be, I ordered R4.5 and the BeOS bible for a whopping 40 bucks. Thats really not that much to part with for one of the best OS's out there. We can always hope for the best. I have a great IDea. I say that we just release the source to Be to Carmack, then we would never have to worry about gaming for Be. We would be set for life.
Gee I really hope that I am in the same trading house that will be doing Caldera, so I can be told that I can't buy the stock as it opens like with Red Hat. On a more serious note thouigh, I doubt that Caldera will exhibit the same gains that Red Hat did out of the gate. My reason for saying this, is the fact that Red Hat was a strange beast to the market, therefore grabing investor's interest. Caldera will become, *that other Red Hat company* As far as the business world is concerned, Red Hat is the linux company and everybody else that hits the market is trying to ride Red Hat's coat tails as long as they can. I could be wrong. I guess we will see what happens soon enough.
I think that the main reason that Gateway created a garbage K6-2 system was the fact that it in the eyes of GW's marketing department, they had found a great alternative to a low cost system. That is utter crap. I work for GW so I was as pissed off as the next guy. The worst part is that I'd say 90 percent of GW's sales force had no idea just how bad the Select systems really were. (Select = AMD systems from GW). I did my best to let every customer know what they were getting themselves into. Then again can you name one mainstream company that has use an K6-2 system to its fullest potenial. I sure as hell can't. It had gotten so bad, that right before the Select systems died, you were not able to make any configuration changes to the system besides adding RAM or changing the hard drive size. None of the other components would function well with the system. We have been told that we are going to be stocking the Athlons for the past month. I don't know when and if it will actually happen. Who knows/ All that I do know is that the Athlon is in too high of a price point to sell cheaply. At least I'm hoping that the don't sell it cheaply. I guess that we will find out soon enough.
Why is everybody so anxious to see what they will call Windows come the late 00's? Quick side track. I don't think that anyone will be refering to the next ten years as the zeros, much like we did for the seventies, eighties, and nineties. Back on track we go. If the *alternate* OS's like Linux Be and BSD continue on the pace that they are presently moving, then we won't have to worry about what they are going to call the version of Windows in the year 2008 or 2009 or whatever. There simply won't be one. It may not happen, but you can't blame a guy for dreaming of a perfect utopia in the future. Every man in history has done it at least once in his lifetime.
I think that I am really sick and tired of reading about people who are suing for things that they should by no right have the ability to even have a say over. Suing Nintendo for including special cards in the packs with regular cards is obserd. Putting the special cards into the packs is what making buying the cards so much fun. I grew up collecting baseball cards and eventually basketball and football cards. In addition to the regular series or cards, there would be at least one special series. These cards were generally worth more money then the rest of the cards were, and yes they were randomly included in the packs with the regular cards. This was what made the whole experience fun. I couldn't wait to open up the and see if I got alittle something special in there, but I also couldn't wait to see if I got another Don Mattingly card in there. I hardly think that it would be right for me to sue Topps, Upper Deck, Fleer, Donruss, and Don Mattingly for that matter. I really do hope that the American leage system doesn't do something wrong and even give these people the time of day, but of course this is just my opinion and why would we really want to bring logic into American leage matters. We never have in the past.
So far I haven't seen anyone bring up the single user helicopters. I remember hearing on the news not more then a couple of years ago of a single person helicopter smaller then a two seat car capable of reaching speeds or roughly 75 MPH. I don't recall the name of the company, but they were selling from somewhere between 3 to 5 thousand dollars. Plus certification costs and lessons of course. Hell, I'm sure that some of you out there have wasted more then that on a good jetski or waverunner. I think that the company that made the IDO's Identitfied Flying Object (Not and official name, but I kind of like it) went out of business. I guess the average America, much like me, fear the same people that make left turns from the right lane with their right turn signals on will be flying above our heads at high speeds. Not a very comforting though. Good luck with flying Moped-type things!!!
Well it seems as if there is going to be another opportunity for people to make a large sum of money in a day or so, that is if you have a few hundred thousand dollars that you like to play around with in the market. I do hope that this doesn't turn into another RedHat fiasco. Its like knowing exactly which horse is going to win a race down at the track, and that the horse that is going to win happens to be going off at 99 to 1 odds. Seems great. So you roll up to the betting window and the teller informs you that since you haven't already bet $100,000 with them in the past, he will not be able to take you bet. Whatever you people do, don't get wrapped up in this whole IPO thing. It will bite you in the ass in the long run.
I hope that I don't stand alone is saying that I am sick and tired of hearing of companies that try to integrate features into products that really don't need them. As a good reference, i recall reading and article on/. not to long ago about an all-in-one refridgerator. To be quite honest it looked really cool, but then again in all the time that I have had both a computer and a refridgerator, I have never once had the urge to check my email from there. Digital VCR is a poor attempt to stop the VCR from dying at the long-sword of the DVD player. I got my DVD player about a month ago, and the sound and picture crush that of a VCR. VCR is going to die like the Yugo. I don't know how long it will take, but it will happen. It is inevitable that technology will die. As for the matter of the built in linux aspect of the device, I'd like to see this VCR top out my computer at home. I surely hope that people aren't thinking that TIVO is going to run The Gimp faster then my 500mhz AMD with 256mb RAM. If it does, then I am all for it, but I highky doubt it. If you are looking to integrate home video and computing. Get your regular computer and throw out your monitor. In exchange for that monitor, purchase the Sony KL-W7000. This is a 37" computer monitor/Television. Then simply buy Sound Blaster live and link out to your home stereo setup. There you go. Linux, big screen TV, and Home Video. There is your answer to it all. Sure it will cost a good deal more then TIVO will, but you are getting a much better all around setup.
Good point on the cost cutting reasons to switch to different chipsets and whatnot, but it all really does come down to promoting more and more lack of upgradiblily. Take the soon to be implemented Intel 810e and 820 chipsets. Sure this is meant for the low end of computers and not for power users, but unfortunately the entire computer industry, on the PC side of things at least, seems to be moving away from the power user's needs in the hurry. Please don't let talks of the Merced and E2k and whatever the newest flavor of the week processor sway your thoughts. Sure there is lots of talk of extremely powerful systems that all seem to be just around the corner, but for every one post of a power chip or device, it seems as if products designed to apeal to the low end computer user and limit upgradability are actually being implemented. The 810 and 820 chipsets integrate just about everything that you could every imagine to cut costs. I mean where the hell are you going to find hardware designed for the AMR riser slot. Not to many sounds/modem cards out there in AMR. It seems as if everything that you see out there is now sub 1000.
I think that I will have to look at it this way. Just be happy that Apple even has a G4 to buy. If this all keeps up, we will no longer see any power systems.
The day that I sub $1000 SGI, I'm quiting computers for good!!!
I have been running AMD's exclusively in my machines for over a year now. (Roughly four machines) I love the chips, and I really cna't wait to pick up an Athlon and build myself another machine, but I am sick an tired of one thing. I haven't touched an Athlon yet so I really don't know what the problems I will have with it, but with my K6 2's and 3's I just can't get enough hardware to co-operate.
Latest problem. I bought a ATI Rage Fury. Love the card. I bought it because I used it on a friend's PII. Great frame rate, great textures, but on an AMD that is not the case. Anyone who has K6-2 try this experiment out. Pop a Rage Fury onto your board and load up the latest Q3 test. Good luck. If you are lucky enough to get into a battle map, don't get too happy. Your screen should lock up in the next few seconds. I have tried each and every updated drive that ATI can throw out at me. I already know the simple answer to this. Buy a TNT2. I will be doing that soon, but I don't want to be forced into doing that. Plus I hate the wasting 200 bucks on buying the card when it first came out. OK enough rambling for now.
It is a great chip and I may have to try the socket version once it pops out. AMD does socket well. Plus that 8meg cache is very promissing.
If any hardware developement companies are reading this and haven't fallen asleep yet, please listen to my demand.
Make your hardware with AMD in mind. I'm sure alot of geeks out there will love you for life.
I don't see all the shock that is being expressed over the lastest move by Apple. Apple does like other people making money from their product, without first taking a really nice cut of it. They have done this from the begining and will continue to do this until the end. Whenever that may be. (Hopefully not too soon) Not letting you you upgrade your system to the latest and the great equipment out on the market has always been around in computers, Apple just likes to take it one step further. They always had. When Intel decides that it would be fun to change the voltage on the board for the Pentium III, so you can't bring your 350 PII to a new level of Quaking, there was really no uproar. Why should Apple's move be that much different.
Basically, if computers companies don't create a cut-off point, how are they going to get everyone to buy they newest products every year or so. I'm not saying that it is fair, but I guess that I have become too desensitized towards corperate computer practices.
This rings so true to me. I have long since ditched the days of going to the bars, and 50 dollars later being in the same state of mind that I was in when I first entered the bar. Actually I was in a better state of mind when I first entered the bar, because I was 50 dollars richer. Long live the people with no tolerence. If I could only be like that. But if you are going to have some beer. It does have to be Guiness. In large quantities might I add.
After reading this wonderful article from those great folks over at AOL, I can now see the errors in way. I think that I will now delete all of the pirated software that I have on my computer and go out and purchase all of the same software. *wait just one second*
That would cost me about $23,000. If I am going to spend that kind of money, I think that I will just go out and buy a new SGI. Sorry AOL, I'm going to have to let you down on this one. OH WELL
Cheap computers making more money is utter bullshit. Albeit I've only been in computer sales for about three years. Then again I'm only 20, but from what I've seen switching from one computer retail center (OD) to an actual computer company (Moocow!!!) I've seen a great difference. The moo at the moo company my average sale is close to 3000 dollars where at the other place it was around 1300. At the moo place I do about 500,000 dollars a month in sales. The other place only netted about 200,000. Good companies put out good computers that people buy **Repeatedly** Shit computer companies put out shit computers that some people get stuck with once in a lifetime. I.E Acer, Compaq, Packard Bell, HP, and I list so long I dare not go on. Trust me cheap computers only make money for a short period of time then they fizzle. If cheap computers were so great, then Compaq wouldn't be taking such a big push into the small to medium grade business level now would they!!!
I don't think that I ever had a problem with inputing with the graffiti system. Well I actually did for some time. About the first 3 minutes that I first had gotten my palm pilot. I decided that it would be easier to just use the build in keyboard. One day I decided to mess around with the graffiti. And low and behold I picked it up in like a minute. there are only like 3 letters that aren't almost exactly how the real letter looks. they are "e" "q" and "f" wow those were hard to learn. I can write graffiti into my pilot without looking at it at aloomst the same speeds that I can write with a pen and a piece of paper. LONG LIVE GRAFFITI!!!
I don't think that the cases should only be in black. I think that any very dark color would produce the same effect. A nice dark forest green would go well. Plus with a dark green case then all of you beige peripherals would match relativily well. But then again where the hell are you going to find a decently priced good quality monitor to match the color that you feel your computer should express.
There is one way that you are Guaranteed to have a top quality black case at the price that you want. Just take your average good quality case and leave it in a particularly dust corner of your house. And in about 2 months. *Presto!!!* black monitor. Actually dark gray, but hey it is close enough.
*Technology is a constand battle between manutfactorers bigger and more indiot-proof systems and nature producing bigger and better indiots.*
First off I'd like to say that you aren't always by a high end sound system when you are on your computer. So let's analize your listening options while on your computer.
1. Little tiny-ass radio next to the computer(nice sound there) 2. CD's played through your computer(that makes it very easy to switch between song that would be on other CDs) 3. Download some great MP3's and listen to them however you want whenever you want)
Tough Choices huh!!!
Besides the fact I have a 22gig hard drive and a CD burner at work. Not to mention my place has 3 T-3 Lines coming in. So downloading time isn't even a question. And if you are saying well I don't have the money for one of those, well don't even get started in that direction. Get a DSL line. They aren't that expensive and they can give you some great download times. OK maybe you are even cheaper then that. Then take all of the time that you spend just IMing 40year old men who pretend that they are 12 year old girls, and start downloading some MP3's. So what if they take 15 minutes to download. I'm sure that you are online for much more then 15 minutes at a clip. Not even a question MP3's are going to be around. (until the MP4's come out that is).
Oh yeah one quick side note. Don't worry Apple will put themselves back onto DeathWatch. They will release an IMac in a color that will bother the hell out of the senior citizens that are buying them and there will be a massive revolt of the elderly again Apple. Trust me, I know these things.
This is all well and good until she starts to equate the computer they built together as a sign of their love. Upon its first crash, she interprets that as a their relationship crashing down around her and leaves him for some guy with a unix box.

Actually, it would work more like this toward the end:
(5) ?????
(6) Profit

1. Little tiny-ass radio next to the computer(nice sound there)
2. CD's played through your computer(that makes it very easy to switch between song that would be on other CDs)
